Singapore, 31 August 2000 | For Immediate Release

A mock-up Internet-based e-learning system for the electronics industry that allows individuals and companies to register and access electronics courseware online will be showcased at the Singapore Learning Exposition 2000, to be held at the Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre (SICEC) from 1st to 3rd September 2000. The mock-up set up by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) is parked under the Online Learning Pavilion. During these three days, the public can visit the IDA booth1 at E24, Hall 4 of SICEC, to find out more about its various e-Learning and infocomm training programmes.

The Internet-based e-learning system initiated and developed in collaboration with members of the e-Learning Technical Standards Committee of Singapore, goes to demonstrate that with established e-Learning standards, online content and learning management systems from different learning service providers2 can interoperate with one another. The Committee is made up of members from the IDA, publishing industry, infocomm companies, user agencies and learning service providers.

"We are delighted to partner with the Ministry of Manpower in propagating learning opportunities at the Singapore Learning Exposition. Through this Exposition, we want to demonstrate the possibilities of learning and that infocomm training can be both fun and value-adding," said Dr Kaizad Heerjee, Assistant Chief Executive, Online Development, IDA.

In addition to promoting e-Learning and infocomm training programmes like the Critical Infocomm Technology Resource Programme (CITREP) and the Strategic Manpower Conversion Programme (SMCP), the public will also be able to pick up some fundamental infocomm skills through the ONE Learning Place (OLP). Visitors to the booth can learn to create their own homepage with guidance from the cyberguides of OLP. In addition, OLP is offering a 20% discount for those who attend training classes between 4th and 10th September 2000.

In conjunction with the Singapore Learning Festival 2000, Ms Koh Siu Lan, Deputy Director for e-Learning Practice, Online Development, IDA, will be speaking on e-Learning at a forum3 called "A Strategic Approach to e-Learning: Trends, Potential and the Future" on the 31st August and 7th September 2000.

The Singapore Learning Exposition 2000 is a key national event of the inaugural Singapore Learning Festival, which spans two weeks from 27 August to 10 September 2000. More than 50 learning institutions will be showcasing the diversity of learning opportunities available to Singaporeans. The highlights of this Exposition will be featured in the 6th episode of Singapore@Work 2000 on 27th September 2000 over TCS 5. This episode focuses on the need to provide continuous training for the human resources, especially in infocomm skills, so as to remain relevant and employable in the new economy.
