Lam Chuan Leong, Chairman, IDA Singapore - Welcome Address
National Infocomm Awards Gala Dinner, Ritz-Carlton Millenia
Singapore, 23 April 2002

Good evening,
Minister David Lim, Ag Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. Welcome to the National Infocomm Awards Gala Dinner cum Awards Presentation.

2. The National Infocomm Awards are meant to recognise excellence in Infocomm Innovation either in the use of Infocomm technology or for the development of Infocomm products and services.

3. I want to thank all those who responded to the call for nomination. Of the 347 nominations, 229 were in the Most Innovative Infocomm Product/Service category while 118 were for the Most Innovative Use of Infocomm Technology.

4. The large number of nominations underscores Singapore's reputation as an ideal location for the development and deployment of innovative infocomm technologies.

5. Choosing the winners from this large group of nominations is not easy. I want to thank the panel of judges who have put in a lot of time and effort during the selection. They include Mr Leong Keng Thai (Ag CEO, IDA), Mr Ho Meng Kit (DS Industry, MTI), BG (NS) Lam Joon Khoi (DS Services, MOF), Dr Toh See Kiat (Chairman, CommerceNet Singapore, our co-organiser), Ms Natasha Kwan (representative from our other co-organiser, ec.Think), Ms Wendy Aw (Immediate Past President, Association of the Telecommunications Industry of Singapore), Mr Chris Rogers (Representative from Broadband Media Association), Mr Willie Cheng (Chairman, SITF), Mr Alain Vandenborre (Vice Chairman, Singapore Venture Capital Association), Mr Stephen Lee (President, Singapore Business Federation), Mr Chew Teck Soon (Partner, PriceWaterHouseCoopers), and Mr Khoong Hock Yun (Assistant Chief Executive, Infocomm Development, IDA). I would also like to thank members of the two evaluation committees led by Dr Kaizad Heerjee (ACE, Online Development, IDA) and Mr Khoong Hock Yun.

6. Also, I wish to express my deepest thanks to our two international judges, Dr Douglas Engelbart, Founder of Bootstrap Institute and Mr Guy Kawasaki, CEO of Garage Technology Venture for their invaluable comments and assessments and for joining us here tonight.

7. Finally, I must also thank the IDA staff who has provided all the staff support for these Awards.

8. To the winners for tonight, I offer my warmest congratulations. However, innovation is like the proverb: "A swallow does not a summer make". Any single innovation, even a winning one, cannot constitute a whole innovation culture. Everyone, the winners and all the others nominations, and also others in the entire country must innovate to make Singapore a successful innovation centre.

9. Thank you. And it is now my pleasure to call on our Minister to address us.
