Celebrating our stories

2013 marks the golden jubilee of local television in Singapore. Let us take a look at how TV has evolved over the years, and how it has touched the lives of many since the 1960s.

Serangoon Road

Set in Singapore in the vibrant and tumultuous 1960s, Serangoon Road  is a detective drama that brings to life the dangerous underbelly of secret societies, the opulent world of European and international expatriates, and the colourful street life of Bugis Street, Chinatown and Serangoon Road.

The series, shot on location in Singapore, features a stellar cast including Don Hany, Joan Chen, Russell Wong and Singapore’s very own Chin Han, Pamelyn Chee and Alaric Tay.

Ilo Ilo

Jack

Aided by the “Outer-Net”, Jack, a scientist of sorts, and his two companions – CHIP and Rocket, embark on numerous adventures to solve little mysteries for Earth’s children. A co-production with Groupe PVP Canada, Jack premiered on TVO in September 2011 and was nominated for Best Animation for the 27th Prix Gemeaux 2012 in Canada. In 2013, the series was a recent winner at the Youth Media Alliance (YMA), and given the Award of Excellence for Best Television Programme, Animation, ages 6 - 8 category.

The Journey: A Voyage

The Journey: A Voyage  is MediaCorp Channel 8's 2013 year-end blockbuster that recounts the travails of first-generation Chinese who set foot on the island of Singapore to seek their fortunes. The journey is one that they must persevere to carve a niche and overcome the difficulties.

The drama series tells the stories of three young men as they face the tumultuous 1920s and survive the odds to eventually call Singapore their home.

Days of Rage

Days of Rage is an epic journey into Singapore’s remarkable past. It combines drama reconstruction, interviews with key eyewitnesses, rare archive, declassified documents, computer graphics and filming from locations in five different countries.

Across the series, we meet the key people caught up during these turbulent times, and hear their personal accounts of these major events.

Arrival of digital TV

On 16 December 2013, MediaCorp began transmitting all seven free-to-air TV channels in digital format using the DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting – Second Generation Terrestrial) broadcasting standard. The existing analogue TV signals will continue to be broadcast alongside the digital TV (DTV) signals, until Singapore’s full transition to DTV. Over the next two to three years, the DTV network, which was first rolled out to the estate of Bukit Batok, will be progressively rolled out to the rest of Singapore.

Safer internet day

Singapore participated in the Safer Internet Day, a global initiative which aims to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people.

Spearheaded by the Media Literacy Council, the event took place on 11 February 2014 with the theme “Let’s Create a Better Internet Together”, and was launched via a multi-platform campaign to promote values and encourage civil and responsible online interactions.
