ASIAN CONNECTION, a new online service, will be released on 28 November 1995 by Singapore Network Services Pte Ltd (SNS).
ASIAN CONNECTION makes use of technology from LIVEwire, a trial information infrastructure developed by the National Computer Board. LIVEwire is part of Singapores IT2000 masterplan to deploy a nation wide information infrastructure that will allow various online, interactive, communication and transaction services to be deployed countrywide. On-going development is still being undertaken by the NCB to further enhance the capabilities of the infrastructure to support different sectoral applications currently under R&D. The first commercial release of the LIVEwire technologies through ASIAN CONNECTION forms the foundation for future services and applications.
The NCB intends to promote and facilitate the spread of the LIVEwire technologies through a series of non-exclusive technology transfer arrangements with interested parties. Through this effort, the NCB hopes to achieve a multiplier effect on the investments made in technology prototyping work in LIVEwire. It wants to encourage companies such as SNS to leverage off the infrastructure to deliver electronic services to their customers.
LIVEwire aims to build and provide for real-world capabilities over existing and future telecommunication networks. The technologies used in LIVEwire services are largely based on the Internet. In addition, LIVEwire has enhanced its services to, for example, provide users with better security mechanisms when interacting with others over a public network, and to provide content developers with good database tools for information search and retrieval.
Mr Stephen Yeo, Chief Executive of the NCB, said "LIVEwire is part of the Board's effort to convert NCBs experimentations with the latest technologies into useful applications. Commercialising these initiatives through SNS, allows the company to extend more applications to businesses and the public.
LIVEwire offers part of the foundation for future services and applications that SNS will be building its ASIAN CONNECTION on. SNS will operationalise various components from the LIVEwire which include:
- Fax interface facility
- Information search and retrieval facility
- Telephony interface facility
- Radio broadcast recording and retrieval facility
- A wide-ranging array of design and development support tools
- Supporting modules for user registration and user authentication
