The finals of the National Software Competition will be held on Saturday, 23 September 1995 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Ngee Ann Polytechnic from 9am to 12 noon.

A total of 147 students from 35 secondary schools and 14 junior colleges will compete in the secondary and junior college sections respectively. (List of participating schools and junior colleges attached). More than 200 guests and supporters are expected at this year's event.

Each team, comprising three students, is required to solve three problems within two hours. Teamwork, skills, speed and accuracy are the main factors of success.

The objectives of the competition are to challenge the students skills in solving problems on a computer and to promote an information technology culture in schools. Judges for the junior college section will comprise lecturers from Ngee Ann Polytechnics Centre for Computer Studies, while judges for the secondary schools section will come from Hwa Chong Junior College, Raffles Junior College, and the Curriculum Development Institute of Singapore (CDIS).

Mr Lim Joo Hong, Director, Information Technology Institute, National Computer Board (NCB) will give away the prizes to the winning teams at the finals.

To further promote an IT culture in schools, a newsletter design contest using computers has been organised this year. Students from secondary schools have been invited to submit newsletter designs based on the theme My School. The newsletter is designed to promote the secondary schools to PSLE school-leavers. To date, some 40 entries have been received. The designs will be exhibited at the Multi-Purpose Hall on the day of the competition and results will be announced during the National Software Competition Prize Presentation Ceremony.

The National Software Competition is an annual event jointly organised by CDIS and NCB, with special assistance from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The main sponsors for the event is the Singapore Federation of the Computer Industry (SFCI). Prize sponsors this year include Challenger Microcomputer Products Pte. Ltd., Creative Technology Ltd., GES Singapore Pte. Ltd., IPC Corporation Ltd., JK Technology Pte. Ltd., Microsoft Singapore Pte. Ltd. and SiS Technologies Pte. Ltd. Technical assistance will be provided by AV-Science Marketing Pte. Ltd. and Systems Technology Pte. Ltd.
