Singapore, 30 April 1999 | For Immediate Release

We refer to The Straits Times report on the SingNet Internet scan. TAS, as regulator of the telecommunication industry, is responsible for ensuring the overall proper functioning of the public telecommunication infrastructure and systems, for the provisioning of telecommunication services.

As far as TAS is concerned, there has been no violation of any TAS rules or regulations in this incident. SingNet has explained that they acted to check the security of their subscribers' computer systems against hacker attacks. While we see such action as an IASP's operational activity, the IASPs may however want to consider keeping their customers informed in future.
