A Step Closer to a Hassle-Free Hospital

Fuelled by Minister for Health, Mr Khaw Boon Wan's vision for a hospital 'designed with patients unambiguously at the centre of the focus and with technology fully exploited', the Healthcare.NET initiative, a three-year pilot project between Alexandra Hospital, The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and Microsoft Singapore was launched on 18th November 2004. This project aims to deliver a patient-centric, seamless and cost effective healthcare system.

Healthcare.NET today announced that phase one of the initiative, known as The Clinical Digital Dashboard is ready. In developing this system, Alexandra Hospital has teamed up with two other like-minded organisations - Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Frontline Solutions Pte Ltd (a subsidiary of Singapore Exchange-listed Frontline Technologies Corporation Ltd) who joined the Healthcare.NET initiative through the Memoranda of Intent. Alexandra Hospital will sign a Memorandum of Intent with the Nanyang Polytechnic to further enhance the Clinical Digital Dashboard. As patients' medical records and information are currently stored in various databases which requires integration, Alexandra Hospital will also sign a Memorandum of Intent with Frontline Solutions to merge the information into a single, connected system, as well as customize information for efficient delivery across multiple devices and to different types of users.

The Memoranda of Intent were signed by Mr Liak Teng Lit, Chief Executive Officer of Alexandra Hospital, Mr Lin Cheng Ton, Principal & Chief Executive Officer of Nanyang Polytechnic and Mr Lim Chin Hu, President & Chief Executive Officer of Frontline Technologies. The signing was witnessed by Mr Saw Ken Wye, President (Southeast Asia), Microsoft and Mr Chan Yeng Kit, Chief Executive Officer of The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, who was the Guest-of-Honour.

Today marks the start of Healthcare.NET's first milestone. Despite dynamic changes in the workflow, Nanyang Polytechnic has developed a fast prototype: a Clinical Digital Dashboard, all within a remarkable speed of 90 days. This prototype has enabled Alexandra Hospital to move one step closer to their dream of creating a hassle-free experience for patients. The first phase of the Clinical Digital Dashboard is being piloted at the Alexandra Hospital's Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), using the wireless infrastructure sponsored by Cisco Systems and Fujitsu Asia. Staff at DEM can register, consult, treat and prescribe medication to patients all at one go, with the Tablet PCs supported by Fujitsu PC Asia Pacific and AsiaPac Distribution Ltd.

"NYP is pleased to support Alexandra Hospital's endeavour in bringing new ideas and solutions to the industry through the Healthcare.NET initiative," said Mr Edward Ho, Deputy Principal/Technology, Nanyang Polytechnic. "This initiative is an excellent opportunity for our staff and students to design, develop and deploy innovative IT solutions for a hassle-free hospital."

"Frontline is excited to be part of this Healthcare.NET's vision in advancing patient care and integrated health services delivery for Singaporeans through the use of information technology. More than optimizing patient care, we look forward to laying the foundation for increasing Singaporeans' awareness and education on their own health levels together with our partners, " said Frontline Technologies' Mr Lim. "Through our regional footprint in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, China and India, we hope to bring this locally developed patient care system to the rest of Asia."

"We will continue to leverage on the latest infocomm technologies to enhance healthcare services delivery in Singapore. In all collaborations, partners play critical roles, with their own strengths and expertise. I am happy to note that we have engaged two more strategic partners to realise the "Hassle-free Hospital" vision. We hope that more Infocomm partners will join us in this exciting journey." said Mr Chan Yeng Kit, Chief Executive Officer, IDA Singapore.

"We aim for perfection, but we are far from perfection today. We do what we can today to work towards perfection," says Mr Liak Teng Lit, Chief Executive Officer of Alexandra Hospital. "We welcome NYP and Frontline Solutions as our valuable partners as an example of another strategic partnership in innovation and technology. These partnerships are important as we are working hard to expand the Healthcare.NET scope. Healthcare today can no longer afford to be reactive when it comes to patient care delivery and management. We need to move with the times and employ innovative solutions to face the emerging challenges of the healthcare industry."
