San Francisco, US, 9 March 2005 | For Immediate Release

Infrastructure Developed to Host Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG) in Asia

Game publishers looking to enter Asia have yet another reason to look to Singapore as their launchpad. The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), a government agency that promotes infocomm technology, today launched a promotion programme for its Games Bazaar Initiative. This adds to the Games Bazaar existing offering of a subsidised and scalable-pay-as-you-use hosting platform launched at last year's Game Developers Conference in San Jose.

Games Bazaar's Promotion Programme

Currently, game publishers face cultural and technical hurdles for each of the Asian gaming markets. The Games Bazaar's Promotion Programme adopts an integrated marketing approach that will help games companies extend their market outreach through Singapore to Asia by assisting them in overcoming these hurdles. The programme includes advertising in key targeted online and print media, regional and international consumer road shows and conferences. In addition, localisation services, such as editing and language dubbing, help ensure games are adapted for local consumer tastes.

"To successfully deploy games that truly interest Asian gamers, games companies need an affordable, quick and scalable means to test market their games to different online gamers in Asia. Games Bazaar's promotion programme addresses this by offering games companies a marketing platform to put beta titles into the hands of their target gamers. This in turn will accelerate their commercialisation into Asia," said Hock Yun KHOONG, Assistant Chief Executive, Industry, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.

The Games Bazaar's Promotion Programme will roll-out in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore for a start and scale-up to include other cities over the next two years.

More on Board Games Bazaar

Today, Games Bazaar has achieved early success with local and foreign games publishers. For instance, Singapore's online games service providers, iGames Asia, PAN*iMX and 10Tacle have leveraged on Games Bazaar to host and distribute their games titles. Korean games companies have also come onboard the Games Bazaar to manage and distribute a pipeline of games through the Games Bazaar. Korea is one of the fastest growing games markets in the world and it is well-known for its vibrant and content-rich domestic industry.

With the launch of today's promotional programme, the Games Bazaar now provides a complete deployment and commercialisation platform for game publishers that include localisation, testing, distribution to and promotion in gaming markets in Asia. Services such as market localisation and testing make use of Singapore's multicultural gaming population as one that provides a unique games-testing environment. In addition, Singapore's recent launch of the business continuity and disaster recovery standard ensures that hosting facilities for distribution and multiplayer games have a higher level of reliability and security.

Another Commercialisation Platform - The GXA

Another effort by Singapore to help companies accelerate their games commercialisation in Asia, is the Games Exchange Alliance of GXA. It helps companies cross 'last-mile' commercialisation hurdles to place games titles into the hands of gamers in Asia. The GXA is a Singapore-Inc network of companies that provide their respective strengths in games distribution, hosting, localisation and marketing to shorten the time-to-market for games companies.

Initiated by the IDA, the GXA is managed by the Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF DMC) and has thirteen members representing different parts of a online games ecosystem. (Please see ANNEX 1 on GXA details.) The GXA is part of IDA's Digital Exchange strategy to grow the volume of digital transactions through Singapore from S$150 million to S$500 million by 2006. Part of the Digital Exchange efforts also involves working with the games developer community to add to the quantity and range of content managed through the Digital Exchange.

Singapore at Game Developers Conference 2005

In a showcase of local games capabilities, IDA leads a delegation of games companies to the Game Developers Conference, held in San Francisco, 9 to 11 March 2005. These companies seek partnership opportunities with US games companies looking to enter into Asia. They are: (Please see ANNEX 2 for company details.)

  • Mikoishi, a game development company specialising in multiplayer and networked mobile games and content development will be showcasing 5 original multiplayer and networked mobile games that have already been deployed and launched with major operators and channel partners throughout 6 countries in Asia - Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and Philippines.

  • Pacific Internet, an internet communications service provider, will showcase its infrastructural capabilities, extensive network coverage in the Asia Pacific region and expertise to provide game companies with a full suite of business-to-business and business-to-consumer solutions. Pacific Internet will also capitalise on its core competencies to help game companies better manage the digital distribution process in the region.

  • SingTel, a telecommunications provider with strong hosting and network infrastructure capabilities, will showcase its EXPAN suite of managed hosting services as well as the Games Bazaar's Promotion Programme at GDC2005. SingTel has played a leading role in providing the network and hosting infrastructure for the Games Bazaar since its launch last year.

  •  Teckwah Online, an online games distributor, with capabilities in games retailing, as well as digital content and related services, will showcase its portal online game called "Hyper Relay" and Noribox, an online franchise distribution model for distributing games to gamers.

Singapore as Ideal Location for Games Deployment and Commercialisation

Singapore is an ideal location to host and manage regional online games and services. It is the most connected city in Asia with more than 16 Gbps of extensive and direct Internet connectivity to over 20 countries. This comprises 6 Gbps to the USA and over 8 Gbps to Asian cities such as Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam. In addition, Singapore's direct Internet connectivity to major ASEAN countries is at least 100 Mbps per country.

Singapore's network infrastructure is also particularly well-suited for digital delivery of data centre space with its 26 Tbps of submarine cable capacity and international and regional telecoms connectivity to more than 100 countries. Today, Singapore is Asia's first neutral Peering Point for GPRS Roaming.

Singapore is ranked first in the World for Networked Readiness Index 2004 - 2005 in World Economic Forum's latest Global Information Technology Report. In January 2005, Singapore was ranked as one of the Top Seven Intelligent Communities in the World by Intelligent Communities Forum (ICF) for its Digital Exchange vision, excellent infocomm infrastructure and global connectivity. Singapore was also ranked first in Asia for Intellectual Property Rights Protection by PERC 2004 and Global Corruption Report, 2003, making it an excellent location for companies to securely store and distribute digital gaming content. Singapore was also rated the Number One Business Environment in Asia Pacific, according to EIU, 2002.

According to DFC Intelligence, the Asia Pacific region is expected to be the largest market for online games with the revenue of US$4.2 billion by 2009. Similarly, IDC forecasts that the Asia/Pacific's wireless gaming market is expected to grow from US$403 million in 2004 to US$1.3 billion by 2008.

IDC in their April 2004 report reported online games revenues are expected to grow from US$1.9 billion to US$5.2 billion in 2006 before exploding to US$9.8 billion in 2008.
