In 2005, the number of employed Infocomm manpower grew by 3.1% from 108,000 in 2004 to 111,400. This is a new high in Infocomm employment. The number of infocomm job vacancies has also doubled, with an increase in the demand for higher end, higher value-added jobs and qualified infocomm manpower.

"The survey results reflect a positive outlook for the Infocomm industry, with an increase in demand for manpower in many areas," noted Mr Chan Yeng Kit, CEO of IDA Singapore. "With such demand projected to rise by 3.4% between 2006 and 2007, Infocomm professionals will be much sought-after within and outside the Infocomm industry. IDA will continue to work with the industry to develop the required talent pool to support the growth of our Infocomm sector and the key economic sectors in Singapore."

More Jobs

The survey indicates that the number of Infocomm job vacancies had more than doubled, from 2,100 in 2004 to 5,700 in 2005. In particular, there was a demand for skills like Software Development, Infocomm Security, Database Management, IT Project Management and Web Services. In 2005, the highest numbers of employed Infocomm professionals were in 'Technical Support', 'Programming & Software Design', and 'Infocomm Sales & Marketing'.

More Educated

The 2005 survey showed that the Infocomm workforce was highly educated - 83% of the Infocomm manpower employed had tertiary education. Among the 111,400 Infocomm professionals employed in 2005, 44% possessed a Bachelor's degree, 24% had a diploma while 15% had postgraduate qualifications (postgraduate diplomas, masters and doctorate). Significantly, the number of Infocomm professionals with bachelor degrees increased to 44% in 2005 as compared to 38% in 2004.

More Sophisticated 2006 marks a momentous milestone for the Infocomm industry. It has been a quarter century since Singapore embarked on national computerisation in 1981. The Singapore workforce has evolved from being just technically skilled to become innovative professionals with strategic business acumen. The fastest growing demand for infocomm manpower is projected to be in high-end jobs in the areas of 'Infocomm Research & Development', 'Digital Media', 'Web Development', and 'Infocomm Consultancy & Project Management'.
