Singapore, 3 May 2007 | For Immediate Release

The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) is seeking views from the industry on proposed strategies and programmes to develop Singapore's next generation of globally competitive infocomm professionals.

Today's public consultation follows up on the recommendations made by the iN20151 manpower chapter to develop a sustainable pool of infocomm talent to drive national economic competitiveness.

Mr Leong Keng Thai, IDA's Deputy Chief Executive and Director-General (Telecoms) said, "For Singapore to become a truly globally-connected city powered by infocomm, we must possess globally competitive infocomm professionals who engage in high value-added activities. Their ability to combine technical know-how with domain experience to develop innovative solutions will enhance Singapore's economic prosperity and sustainability as an infocomm hub."

Given the pervasive adoption of infocomm and its potential to transform lives and businesses, the month-long public consultation is opened to all, including the people, private and public sectors. Their views will also help IDA better understand issues facing infocomm professionals.

The public consultation exercise seeks views in the following broad areas:

  1. characteristics and skill sets of the next generation of globally competitive professionals;
  2. manpower demand forecasts for the short, medium and longer term;
  3. skills requirements and gaps of companies in the infocomm sector as well as companies in other economic sectors such as finance and healthcare;
  4. competencies of fresh infocomm graduates; and
  5. proposed implementation strategies for infocomm professionals.

The public consultation paper entitled “Proposed Manpower Development Implementation Strategies for Infocomm Professionals in Singapore” is available on IDA’s website https://www.imda.gov.sg/ under the Manpower section. Respondents have up till 1 June 2007 to revert with their comments. IDA will review the comments received and refine its implementation approach for developing Singapore’s next generation of globally competitive infocomm professionals.
