IDA's inaugural Data visualisation challenge ends on a high note!

"The Singapore Story, as told by headline news", by Paul and Hanif, is the winning Singapore story using Open Data at IDA's inaugural Data in the City Visualisation Challenge. The Challenge wrapped up a week of data events by IDA and is also in celebration of SG50.

Distilling a sense of historical mood and memory across the years, this winning visualisation depicts the trends in the words used in headlines of The Straits Times from 1955-2009. This is done by analysing the frequency of words and phrases in the headlines and visualising them through a compelling story. (http://singaporenews.github.io)

Held today at ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, 10 finalists battled it out before the judges and a packed audience of over 120. Each visualisation used at least one government data from data.gov.sg or OneMap to tell their Singapore story – to uncover history, interesting, new patterns and even an opportunity to draw insights into future behaviour.

The Guest of Honour for the Challenge finals, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Chairman of Government Parliamentary Committee for Communications and Information said, "IDA's inaugural data visualisation Challenge has pushed Singapore's open data movement forward by eliciting many interesting data visualisations that celebrate Singapore's history and progress. It has also brought together people from different fields, professions and ages. Indeed, open data is for all".

Besides the top prize of $6000 cash, the second and third prizes of $4,000 and $2000 cash went to Educity and Foodies @ I2R respectively.

Educity

Consisting interactive graphs that showcase insightful education metrics of Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarships and scholars, Educity's visualisation is a historical reflection of educational milestones that have occurred since 1823.

Foodies @ I2R

The visualisation, "Food Loves Fellowship", celebrates Singapore's favourite pastime: eating. It illustrates the diversity of local cuisines in various areas around the country and allows users to discover where to find their favourite dishes and the best places to enjoy them.

The other seven finalists received $500 cash each. Selected visualisations will also be showcased at the National Museum, Public Libraries, Science Centre or ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands. (See Annex A for details of data visualisations and the teams).
