Robotic cars were specially made by Singapore students at the IDA Labs, and presented to visiting foreign leaders at the Ministerial Forum Welcome Dinner, held as part of the Infocomm Media Business Exchange (imbX) 2014.
The building of RobotCar was facilitated by the IDA Labs, and different versions were created by more than 90 students from various local secondary schools, Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnics over two days (30 May and 2 June). These schools are School of Science and Technology, Nan Chiau High School, Bukit View Secondary, Jun Yuan Secondary, ITE College East, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic.
Apart from guidance on basic programming and assembly using the Arduino electronics prototyping platform, the students were given the freedom to tinker with the technology and build in components such as ultrasonic and light sensors. Some students who were up for a challenge could also assemble additional components, such as indoor air quality sensor, real time clock and musical buzzer into the robotic cars.
"As Singapore moves forward as a Smart Nation, IDA is driving a culture of creating and building. Through our IDA Labs, we want to expose as many students as possible to cool technologies, such as the world of robotics," said Mr Steve Leonard, Executive Deputy Chairman, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.
"The RobotCar workshop we hosted two weeks ago did just that – in providing kids with hands-on experience working with coding and simple robotics, and having fun customising the cars using their imagination. We hope RobotCar will leave our guests with happy memories of how some young Singaporeans are using the IDA Labs to tinker with tech," Mr Leonard added.
Into its 10th year, the Ministerial Forum is a closed-door platform for ICT Ministers and senior government officials to discuss key ICT policies and developments. The Welcome Dinner was held at the IDA Labs at the National Design Centre, and was hosted by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information.
