Top three teams crowned at CloudAsia 2015

Students from five institutes of higher learning (IHLs) took part in the Data-Driven Innovations Challenge, organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), to develop solutions, working prototypes and visualisations using datasets, with at least one dataset from the Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) platform.

The DDI challenge had IHL students generate solutions which would drive their understanding of Big Data, dataset use, and the mashing of multiple datasets together. This is key in Singapore’s Smart Nation journey as the country moves towards greater use of Big Data to drive new insights and an anticipatory government utilizing technology to the fullest to benefit citizens.

The challenge took place in two rounds. In the first qualifying round, participating IHLs selected up to three shortlisted teams per institute to enter the final round, where teams would be judged on their submissions by a panel of senior school representatives and industry experts.

Of the 16 submissions submitted, the following winners were selected:

First prize – Project Check.Go.Earn by Adriel Lam Hoe Yan and Lim Chee Xiong from Singapore Polytechnic – infographics story to showcase how data journalism can be used to enhance the visitor experience at shopping malls. The infographics were created based on shopping mall footfall data from DaaS.

Second prize – Two-Pronged Approach to Smart Transportation in Singapore by Chan Shi Cong and Ng Jia Min from Temasek Polytechnic - infographics story that demonstrated how DaaS‘s transport related datasets could be used to provide smoother rides for commuters.

Third prize – Silver Eye by Samuel Cheah, Ashton Goh and Ng Ying Xian from Temasek Polytechnic – web mobile application as a monitoring solution to ensure effective care-giving for the elderly. The app is powered by elderly activity analysis data found on the DaaS platform.

“The innovative mashups generated by the Data-driven Innovation Challenge demonstrate the value of these datasets when put in the hands of our young innovators. We hope to inspire more youths to use data to solve problems and create solutions. It is also a good opportunity for students to hone their data analytics and visualization skills, which are essential capabilities required in a Smart Nation,” said IDA Assistant Chief Executive Khoong Hock Yun.

The winners were announced at CloudAsia on 29 October 2015. CloudAsia is co-organised by the IDA and co-located with Cloud Expo Asia & Data Centre World for the third year in Singapore.
