The Ease of Interconnectivity with Web Services

Mrs Tan Ching Yee, Chief Executive Officer
Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore
Speech - Launch of the SISTIC Ticketing Infrastructure, Singapore Indoor Stadium
Singapore, 29 April 2004

Good afternoon
Mr Alex Chan, Chairman of SISTIC,
Dr Chan Tat Hon, Assistant Chief Executive, STB,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. I wish to thank SISTIC for inviting me here today to witness a milestone in your history - the launch of the new Web Services-based ticketing system (STIX), which is the first in Asia.

2. This new system is part of SISTIC's new growth strategy to cater to different markets as its businesses expand. With STIX, it is able to seamlessly integrate different processes and requirements from various industries and countries under one system. The system thus facilitates the growth of new revenue opportunities for SISTIC. I am sure your first service outlet in Johor Bahru would not be the last.

3. Built on Web Services, this new ticketing system is developed by a Singapore infocomm company, Ecquaria Technologies. Ecquaria Technologies has made its name for itself from its e-government solutions. It won a deal last year with the World Bank to provide e-government solutions in Mexico. Ecquaria has since moved into developing solutions for the arts and entertainment sector with Esplanade as one of its customers.

4. This new system enables SISTIC to analyse customer profiles, and this in turn can help it to design more effective marketing programmes to reach out to particular target audiences. More importantly, SISTIC can now offer its ticketing infrastructure to other businesses in the lifestyle, entertainment and travel sector. Customers looking for one-stop lifestyle services, from buying movie tickets to browsing related merchandise or even book a tour, will now be able to do so with STIX.

5. I am encouraged by the launch of SISTIC's new ticketing infrastructure today. It is an example of how companies in Singapore are increasingly embracing technology to improve and re-engineer their business processes. In so doing, they increase revenue opportunities and improve customer experience.

6. As with any new project implementation, there will be some challenges - old habits to change, people to train and re-train, stakeholders to convince. The Canadian author and philosopher, Marshall Mcluhan once said: "Our age of anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today's jobs with yesterday's tools." While infocomm technology cannot hope to cure all anxieties, it can certainly be part of a total business solution that gives us tools of today and tomorrow to do our jobs now.

7. IDA is an agency under MITA.  I acknowledge my colleague, Chief Executive of the National Arts Council (NAC), Lee Suan Hiang who is here today. I am therefore happy that technology is being used in the service of business and the arts, thus helping to bring enjoyment and mental nourishment to many.

8. On this note, let me once again congratulate SISTIC for creating new tools for today. Thank you.
