Singapore Broadcasting Authority (SBA) Commissions Contemporary Drama Series on Love and Marriage

Dated: 18 December 2001

The Singapore Broadcasting Authority (SBA) has commissioned a contemporary drama series centred around the theme of love and marriage. Entitled Love Matters, the programme will make its debut on MediaCorp TV's Channel 5 on Saturday, 5 January 2002 at 10 pm.

Funded at $420,000 by SBA under its commissioning scheme, Love Matters consists of seven one-hour episodes featuring a collection of individual stories. The series explores marital issues in the Singapore context in both light-hearted and serious ways while offering different perspectives of marriage as an institution. The idea for the series first came about in early 2001 when the Ministry of Community Development and Sports (MCDS) suggested a series on marriage. SBA discussed this with Channel 5 and it was decided that a drama could be a good way to explore the issues of love and marriage.

The series is produced by seven local production houses who were shortlisted for the project following their submissions. They are: Big Communications, CVA Film &Television, Czine, Film Formations, Oak 3 Films, Ochre Pictures and Zhao Wei Films. Selecting the best proposals from different production houses allows for variety in storylines and treatment. It also provides an opportunity for new production houses to showcase their expertise in drama production.

Ms Amy Chua, SBA's Director of Programmes said, "We were impressed by the quality of stories and ideas submitted by the production houses. Drama is a good way to explore human relationships and attitudes towards love and marriage. We hope to commission thematic dramas like this on a regular basis."

Apart from the entertainment value of the series, SBA hopes that this series will reflect Singaporean attitudes and concerns about love and marriage, and get viewers to think about the issues explored.
