Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside), winner at the 2004 Venice Film Festival and directed by Alejandro Amenabar will open the first-ever AMF(Asia Media Festival) Film Showcase which will take place from 29 November to 3 December 2004 at Golden Village Marina. Presented by the Singapore Film Society (SFS) and Golden Village with the support of the Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore and Reed Exhibitions, the Showcase focuses on international co-productions, one of the themes of this year's Asia Media Festival, and will feature critically acclaimed films from the international film circuit.

The opening film is a Spanish film, Mar Adentro, directed by Alejandro Amenabar who also directed The Others, starring Nicole Kidman. The film won the Jury's Grand Prix (Silver Lion) at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year and its star, Lola Duenas - famous for her role in Talk to Her by Pedro Almodovar - will present the film on 29 November 2004 at the Golden Village Marina. The movie has been slated for a commercial release on 6 January 2005.

Other films in the Showcase include a co-production between Singapore and Hong Kong called Rice Rhapsody which stars Martin Yan and Sylvia Chang - who has been nominated Best Actress at the 2004 Golden Horse awards for her role in this film;Nobody Knows (Daremo Shiranai), Japan's official entry for the 2005 Oscars' Best Foreign Film category;Schizo (Shiza) which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival (Un Certain Regard section) in 2004;and Strings, a puppet animation that was presented at the 2004 London Film Festival.

Elaborating on the Showcase, Mr Seto Lok Yin, Director of Industry Development at the MDA said, "The AMF Film Showcase serves to complement the Asia Film Market and Conference, one of the key events at the Asia Media Festival. The Showcase presents cinematographic works recently seen at major international film festivals. These films are excellent examples of co-productions, which is one of the focal themes at the trade events at Asia Media Festival this year."

Mr Kenneth Tan, Chairman of the Singapore Film Society and Managing Director of Golden Village, said, "We are proud to co-organise this Showcase at a significant time when the activity and output levels of Singapore's film and media industry are growing so rapidly. The AMF Film Showcase goes beyond just film festival sessions or just trade screenings. It is a landmark event that we intend to have annually and which we are confident will become an integral part of the regional film calendar."

The AMF Film Showcase is open to trade delegates of AMF, invited guests, members of SFS as well as to members of the public.

The films will be screened at GV Marina from 29 November to 3 December 2004.
