First 3D Animated Television Co-Production by ST Electronics
The Science Centre Singapore offers a glimpse of tomorrow with the Asian debut of "The Future is Wild", a first-of-its-kind 3D animated children’s TV series co-produced in Singapore.
Jointly-produced by Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited’s subsidiary, ST Electronics (Training &Simulation Systems) Pte Ltd, and Nelvana with the support of the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), "The Future is Wild" is the first Singaporean 3D animated television co-production to have been broadcasted on TV in the United States and Germany. It will also be the first 3D animated TV series to be broadcast locally when it airs on the new okto channel from 3 January 2009 at 1:30 pm.

We will jointly market and promote 'The Future is Wild' Kids Series to museums and science centres worldwide through permanent and travelling exhibitions, workshops and TV series preludes. Science Centre Singapore and ST Electronics will also be partnering to develop creative exhibition concepts involving animatronics, a 4D theatre experience, simulator rides and interactive gaming consoles.
Based on a similarly-named documentary that became the all-time top-rated prime time TV show on Animal Planet, this 26-part series follows the adventures of Ethan, Emily and Luis, three adventurous present-day children who are brought to the future by C.G., a girl from 12,000 A.D. Together they solve mysteries behind Earth’s evolution, in an exotic evolved world of extreme climates and strange animals.
Apart from the exciting storyline injected with witty humour, audiences will also be wowed by the creative use of both 3D and 2D elements that bring the futuristic images and ideas to life. In conjunction with Maya-based software, the animation team used ambient occlusion, a shading method which helps add realism to local reflection models. This brings a softer look to CG animation, and coupled with hand-held camera effects, imparts a modern, polished look.
Playing a driving role in bringing these futuristic images and ideas to life is director Mike Fallows and his CG (computer graphics) animation team at Toronto’s Nelvana. The Emmywinning director, whose work includes acclaimed programmes such as Donkey Kong Country, Rolie Polie Olie, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Kids and Jane and the Dragon, was drawn to the project because of all its inherent creative challenges.
Splitting the work with Nelvana on the project is ST Electronics’ animation studio, iVL Animation, which previously worked with Fallows on Jane and the Dragon.
"The Future is Wild" will screen at Science Centre from 29 November 2008 to 2 January 2009
and is suitable for families of all ages.
