The Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) and MediaCorp today revealed the seven winners of the joint call-for-proposal (CFP) for local composers to score music for seven MediaCorp TV dramas. The initiative is aimed at giving national exposure to local musicians as well as uncover new talent. The inaugural joint CFP launched last September attracted an overwhelming 103 song demos by 55 local music producers and music production companies.

The winning compositions include the theme songs for five Chinese dramas, one English drama and one Malay drama (refer to Annex A (343.91KB) for list of winners). The winners will see their original composition receive airplay on MediaCorp’s free-to-air TV channels and as catch-up TV on xinmsn. In addition, the theme songs will broadcast on selected MediaCorp’s radio stations at least two weeks prior to the first telecast of the show, during the show and minimally one month after the show ends.

The first song to debut is Coffee Romance (咖啡恋) by Wise Entertainment for the web drama 96ºC Café, which is set to telecast on xinmsn on 18 Feb, before the drama’s run on Channel 8 in April.

“The sheer number of submissions goes to show that there is strong interest among our talent pool and I am truly encouraged by the response,” said Mr Chang Long Jong, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of MediaCorp. “Good drama theme songs help connect viewers emotionally, drawing them closer to the unfolding of plots and characters. We see this collaboration with MDA as a very important one both in terms of discovering and nurturing new music talent as well as strengthening the overall appeal of our local productions.”

“The quality of music received for this round of call-for-proposal is commendable, and shows the high standard of works our music talent can produce. This initiative has also opened up doors for more local music talent, as MediaCorp explores opportunities with other promising applicants beyond just the winners,” said Mr Yeo Chun Cheng, Assistant Chief Executive Officer (Industry) of Media Development Authority. “Singapore audiences can expect to hear more quality local music on our free-to-air platforms as MDA continues our partnership with MediaCorp in showcasing local talent.”

The next call-for-proposal for theme song production will be announced by first quarter of this year. MDA will fund up to S$8,000 under its Development Assistance grant scheme for selected applicants to develop each theme song. The funding can be used to offset expenses such as studio hire, mixing cost as well as producer, composer and artiste fees.
