Singapore is the world's most successful economy in exploiting infocomm developments. This latest accolade is awarded by the World Economic Forum in its latest Global Information Technology Report1. Singapore tops the rankings of the Networked Readiness Index 2004-2005 for the first time. The Index measures the ability of individuals and government to tap into the potential of infocomm technology, as well as the government usage of infocomm technology.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Chan Yeng Kit, Chief Executive Officer of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore said, "We are most heartened that Singapore is ranked first in the world in World Economic Forum's Global Information Technology Report. The high rankings achieved by Singapore in the Networked Readiness Index are testimony to the commitment and efforts put in by Singapore to transform the public, private and people sectors through the innovative use of infocomm technology."

Today, 74% of all households in Singapore own one or more personal computers and 65% have Internet access. Of those who have Internet access, 2 out of 3 are on broadband2. About 83% of all companies in Singapore use a computer and 76% of all companies have Internet access3. Mobile phone penetration in Singapore also reached 92%. There are also 1,600 Government Services available online, including popular applications like Income tax e-filing.

"Moving forward, IDA Singapore will build on the current success to help Singapore through the next phase of infocomm development. Our vision is a Singapore where infocomm technology has helped to create a conducive environment for thriving businesses, smart workforce and a well-connected society. Called iN2015, it will be a vision to be created through the combined efforts of the government, industry and people," added Mr. Chan.
