Dr Francis Yeoh Song Chian has been appointed Director of the Information Technology Institute (ITI), the applied research and development arm of the National Computer Board (NCB), with effect from 1 December 1995.

Dr Yeoh joined the NCB in 1984 and has been with the ITI since it was set up in 1986. Dr Yeoh managed the Computer and Communications Lab in ITI for several years before moving on to become Director, R&D in 1993.

When the National Science and Technology Board was set up in 1991 Dr Yeoh spent 18 months there as Director of the Technology Division. He was responsible for all technology matters such as research grants, research institutes and infrastructure. Dr Yeoh started Technet in 1991 and was the first chairman of the Technet Steering Committee. He was also actively involved in the development of the first National Technology Plan in 1991. Dr Yeoh went to pursue a Masters degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
