Singapore, 24 January 1997 | For Immediate Release

From 1 February 1997, the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (TAS) will reduce the type approval fee for digital cellular phones from $1,500 to $350.

The move is part of TAS' continual effort to bring about a wider range of equipment available for consumers to choose from. The reduced fee will help to lower equipment suppliers and dealers' operating costs and hence encourage them to bring in more new and innovative digital cellular phones for type approval.

The type approval fee for cellular phones was last revised from $2,550 to $1,500 on 1 March 1995. The latest reduction in fees has been made possible by TAS' review of its evaluation procedure of equipment in accordance to TAS' specifications. The type approval fee for analog cellular phones will remain at the existing $1,500 as physical testing of equipment is still required.

TAS will continue to review and streamline its operating procedures and pass on any benefits arising from its review to the suppliers/equipment dealers and ultimately the consumers.

Note to the Editor:

To protect the public interest, type approval of equipment is necessary to ensure that the user's equipment can work properly with the network and that the user will get good transmission and reception. It also ensures that the use of the equipment will not cause harm to the network or interference to other users, thus maintaining the high quality network in Singapore.
