Singapore, 20 July 1998 | For Immediate Release

From 1 August 1998, the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (TAS) will implement a "One-Stop Service" scheme for consumers wanting to use cellular phones which have been purchased overseas. With the new scheme, consumers can now apply directly to the cellular service providers for individual connection approval and service connection.

Under the existing individual approval procedure, consumers with cellular phones purchased overseas have to make two stops before they can use their phones in Singapore. Consumers must first seek individual connection approval from TAS, before they can sign up for service with the cellular service providers. With the new "One-Stop Service" scheme, individuals can approach the cellular service providers directly for individual approval and service connection. Individuals need only to bring along their cellular phone, personal identification card, and the purchase invoice. However, they will still be required to declare that the phone is purchased overseas. A fee for individual approval will be chargeable by the service providers.

The "One-Stop Service" scheme is part of TAS' continual efforts to provide responsive and efficient service to consumers. The new procedure will facilitate faster service connection of cellular phones and hence, will enhance convenience to consumers, as they will no longer need to bring their overseas cellular phones to TAS for individual approval.

Although the one-stop service scheme for service connection of overseas-purchased cellular phones is convenient, TAS encourages consumers to purchase TAS type approved phones in Singapore for local use. This is because such phones have already been checked to ensure that they meet the technical requirements and are able to inter-work properly with the local cellular network. The phones are also checked for SIM1 -locking to the overseas network operators. In addition, the phones are checked to ensure that they will be able to support advanced service features such as SMS (Short Message Service), facsimile transmission and data communication.

For general enquiries pertaining to overseas purchased cellular phones, the public may contact the cellular service providers, SingTel Mobile Pte Ltd (Tel: 1626) and MobileOne Pte Ltd (Tel: 1627).
