Singapore, 23 February 2000 | For Immediate Release

In line with the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore's (IDA) goal to dot-com the people sector, IDA will organise the first experiential event on broadband multimedia and online applications - eFestival Asia - from 1 to 7 March 2000 at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (SICEC) Hall 404.

Slated as the Mardi Gras of multimedia, eFestival Asia is a dazzling seven-day showcase of the best in interactive broadband multimedia services. This multi-sensory exhibition will demonstrate to everyone how infocomm technologies can be part of our daily life at school, work and home. eFestival Asia is the anchor event of eCelebrations Singapore, a 5-week extravaganza to promote the use and adoption of information and communications technology (ICT) to the people.

Built on four themes: learn, play, create and connect, eFestival Asia brings infocommunications closer to the people and helps to develop and nurture a net savvy info-society as Singapore progresses into a knowledge-based economy.

Thirty-six exhibitors will be displaying interactive multimedia applications that allow visitors to "SEE, FEEL, TOUCH, DISCOVER" a whole new interactive and broadband experience.

Singapore Cable Vision (SCV) will showcase the Net Home, a special feature that will provide a glimpse of a connected home. SCV uses their broadband services to demonstrate how broadband services are relevant to everyday life.

Visitors to the show can have their first encounter with WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) applications. Siemens ICN will bring in their mobile phones and wireless terminals with secure access to email and Internet communications.

SGI will showcase their Reality Centre Technology that enables visualisation and real-time interaction with a simulated environment without subjecting the users to the danger, impracticality and expenses associated with the physical world. This technology has been used extensively in product prototyping, hazardous task training, medical education, entertainment content-creation.

To accelerate online transactions, eFestival Asia teams up with SingTel Yellow Pages and FRESHdirect to set up an E-shopping Pavilion that allows visitors to experience the fun and convenience of online shopping.

Game enthusiasts have the opportunity to pit their skills against each other in SingTel Magix's Ultimate Challenge Pavilion.

Institutes of Higher Learning such as Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Nanyang Technological University, LaSalle SIA College of the Arts will profile creative content on eLearning, computer animation and 3D Interactive virtual shopping mall.

Alongside the exhibition, Birds of a Feather (BOF) sessions will provide a platform for artists to showcase their creations on animation, special effects, digital art and digital music.

Ms CC Lee, Professor from Howard University's Department of Art, will share her digital expressions at the BOF session. She uses the digital medium to create traditional Chinese brush works. "I have three goals in my artistic career. One is to learn from the past and preserve the importance of the past. The second is to express the present and reflect the events and sentiments of our time. The third is to project the future and explore the unknown frontier through art. In this technological-driven age, I use the computer to create art that embodies these goals," said Ms Lee.

Prominent digital producer, Mr John Chu, founder and CEO of Centro Digital Pictures, who co-produced The Storm Riders in 1998 and A Man Called Hero in 1999 will also share his experience at the BOF session. Both movies won the prestigious Golden Horse Award for Best Visual Effects in consecutive years "We provide image-makers with the most technologically advanced palette of tools and creative expertise, enabling them to create the picture of their dreams," said Mr Chu.

"The eFestival Asia will be a multi-sensory experience. The uninitiated can draw benefits of the connected lifestyle from the interactive displays. The already savvy can benefit from the BOF sessions where like-minded people share and learn," said Mrs Pam Soh, Deputy Director of Culture Promotion from IDA.

To sustain the public's interest in broadband multimedia and online technologies, IDA has engaged Reed Exhibition Companies to manage eFestival Asia for three consecutive years. Said Reed's President, Mr Jimmy Lau, "We are honoured to be appointed by the IDA to be the event manager. With the government's resolve to introduce online technologies and interactive multimedia to every home, school and business, Singapore's position as a leading e-commerce hub will be further strengthened. The eFestival Asia will be a good place to learn, share and experience what a digital lifestyle will be all about."

eFestival Asia is open to the public free of charge from 1-6 March 10 am - 10 pm and on 7 March 10 am to 4 pm.
