Companies to Establish Mobile Computing Centre -- Palm Authorised Training Centre for Palm OS Platform Developers in Asia Pacific
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM), Temasek Polytechnic and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) today signed a memorandum of intent (MOI) for the establishment in Singapore of a Mobile Computing Centre for Palm OS platform developers.
The Mobile Computing Centre, a Palm authorised training centre, will be located at Temasek Engineering School. It is the first of its kind in Asia Pacific and will be established with the support of IDA.
The Mobile Computing Centre will provide Palm OS platform training for developers located in Singapore and Asia Pacific, equipping them with skills to address an increasing worldwide demand for handheld computing solutions.
Mr. Ang Keng Loo, deputy principal, Temasek Polytechnic, and Mr. Khoong Hock Yun, assistant chief executive, IDA, signed the MOI with Mr. Chng Poh Hwa, regional director, Palm Singapore Sales Pte Ltd, during a ceremony held today in Singapore.
"In view of the pool of potential Palm OS platform developers in Singapore and Asia Pacific, and the interest in handheld computing technology, we have initiated the region's first Mobile Computing Centre for Palm OS platform developers," said Mr. Ang Keng Loo, deputy principal, Temasek Polytechnic. "Handheld computing is a fast-growing market segment, and we believe that developers will benefit greatly from the certified training to be made available at Temasek Polytechnic."
Mr. Khoong Hock Yun, assistant chief executive, IDA, commented that the agreement is in keeping with IDA goals to promote the information and communications industry in Singapore: "Mobile computing will become more pervasive in Singapore with the advent of smaller and more portable devices. The readiness of our infocomm professionals in meeting the demands spawned by this opportunity will become key in our efforts to make Singapore a place where the 21st century feels like home. We welcome industry-led efforts, such as the establishment of the Mobile Computing Centre, which shares new and exciting knowledge of widely adopted standards such as that of the Palm OS platform."

Mr. Jeremy Lee, chief executive officer of Sunderland Technologies Pte Ltd, a company that develops attachment devices for Palm handhelds and enterprise solutions on the Palm OS platform, commented on the initiative: "The Mobile Computing Centre will fuel the growth of the Palm Economy, helping to generate the expertise necessary to meet demand for handheld computing solutions."
9 Under the terms of the MOI:

IDA will provide partial funding to Temasek Polytechnic for the establishment and ongoing operation of the Mobile Computing Centre, including staff, equipment, training and software;

IDA will also provide support for activities such as conferences, workshops and seminars related to the objectives of the Mobile Computing Centre, and support training for staff of Temasek Polytechnic involved in the activities of the Mobile Computing Centre;

Temasek Polytechnic will provide trainers and training facilities, and will incorporate Palm OS platform programming training into at Temasek Engineering School's curriculum. In addition, Temasek Polytechnic will provide partial funding for software, equipment and staff;

Palm will contribute a Palm OS Platform Technology Development Training Agreement , which licenses Palm OS platform technology for the purpose of training and development. Palm also will contribute handhelds, Palm OS platform software development kits, and associated software and documentation;

Palm will also provide training and certification in Palm OS platform programming for the course's instructor(s) and ongoing access to a broad range of relevant Palm OS platform technical resources.
Developers educated at the Mobile Computing Centre -- a Palm authorised training centre -- are expected to engineer solutions that enhance and extend the Palm OS platform, including handheld software applications, wireless Internet content and systems integration applications.
