Singapore, 14 February 2002 | For Immediate Release

Singapore will be represented for the first time at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes together with some of its wireless industry players.
Led by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the "Singapore-Wired With Wireless" pavilion will showcase innovative technologies developed locally as well as the business opportunities in Singapore.

Located at Stand J50 Hall 3, four Singapore-based exhibitors will also be present at the show. They are Hewlett-Packard Mobile E-Services Bazaar, Systems@Work, I'M Technologies and SmartEdge (see Annex A).

Visitors to the pavilion can get a snapshot of wireless activities in Singapore:

  • Mobile solutions for marketing, entertainment and information services through HP mobile e-Services Bazaar,
  • Telemoney secure payments over the Internet and wireless channels by Systems@Work,
  • 3G USIM card as well as micro-browser SIM card that allows Internet downloads onto the GSM handset by I'M Technologies and
  • Intelligent interaction between everyday devices and location-based solutions by SmartEdge.

Pervasive Wireless Access - Making Wireless Access Seamless

Imagine sitting at your office transferring a budget spreadsheet from your PDA to the bluetooth-enabled laptop already hooked on to the company's Intranet via WLAN.

Under IDA's Call for Collaboration (CFC) for Pervasive Wireless Access (see Annex B), invitations are open to global wireless technology players who can do these in Singapore:

  • Test bed and demonstrate the pervasive wireless access of content and applications through the use of GPRS, 802.11 WLAN and Bluetooth; and
  • Showcase the possible integration of wireless access technologies to support the way professionals at work and at play.

Living Lab and Test Bed in Asia

Located strategically at the crossroads of Asia, Singapore offers a vibrant and competitive infocomm environment, where global wireless industry players can leverage as a living lab for wireless innovation in Asia.

Its integrated telecommunications infrastructure for both wireline and wireless as well as pro-business policies have provided a conducive environment for R&D activities for wireless technologies. Together with its multi-ethnic and innovation-friendly population, Singapore is poised to serve as the ideal test bed for the development and launch of new wireless applications, products and services.

Given its global connectivity and accessibility to the Asian market, more than 6,000 multi-nationals and local wireless players have established their wireless R&D and test-bed activities in Singapore. Notable examples include Siemens, Ericsson Cyberlab, Hewlett-Packard and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young.

Singapore has one of the world's highest mobile phone penetration rates at 70%. In view of burgeoning wireless developments, the Wired With Wireless programme was launched in October 2000 to catalyse wireless industry development and position Singapore as Asia's launch pad for wireless products and services.

ANNEX B: CFC FOR PERVASIVE WIRELESS ACCESS

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) is inviting the industry to participate in its Call For Collaboration (CFC) under the Wired With Wireless (WWW) programme. This CFC aims to enable pervasive wireless access in Singapore.

Currently, 3 wireless access technologies are emerging in Singapore. Mobile operators have launched the General Packet Radio Services (GPRS). The use of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) based on IEEE 802.11 standard is becoming prevalent in enterprises and community hotspots. More consumer appliances will also be fitted with Bluetooth.

These technologies will enable users to access, retrieve and exchange information free of restrictions from wires in different wireless networks. These wireless networks are characterise by their operating ranges and data delivery speeds. For example, Bluetooth is designed for users of voice and data communication equipment to replace the need for wires in Personal Area Networks (PAN), which are typically not more than 10m in radius. 802.11 WLAN is designed for users to replace the need for wires in Local Area Networks (LAN), which are typically not more than 100m in radius. And GPRS supports wireless voice and data communication in urban cellular networks, which are typically more than 1,000m in radius.

The convenience and productivity gains resulting from pervasive wireless access is significant. For example, one should potentially be able to access, retrieve and exchange information whenever and wherever we are - in our workplace, in our public buildings in our outdoor environment, in our community areas, and in our homes - free of restrictions from wires. The combined use of these GPRS, 802.11 WLAN and Bluetooth will fundamentally change the way we work, operate and live.

Specifically, this CFC aims to

  • Create a test bed to demonstrate the pervasive wireless access of contents and applications through the use of GPRS, 802.11 WLAN and Bluetooth; and
  • 2 Showcase the possible integration of wireless access technologies to support the way professionals work and live in the enterprise, public buildings, outdoor environment, community areas and at home.

Further details of the Pervasive Wireless Access CFC can be downloaded from the IDA website at https://www.imda.gov.sg/ under the sections Key Programmes > Wired With Wireless > Call For Collaboration for Wireless Projects > Pervasive Wireless Access.
