Singapore, 6 June 2003 | For Immediate Release

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has rejected SingPost's tariff application1 to increase the domestic postage rates for the 20g and 40g weight step mails. This decision was arrived at after a detailed review of SingPost's proposal and an audit of SingPost's figures.

IDA's review sought primarily to determine whether SingPost's request was justified. SingPost had justified the proposed increase on grounds of recovering higher operating costs. IDA's audit and review of SingPost's proposal concluded that SingPost's current postage rates for the 20g and 40g weight step mails are sufficient to cover the cost of providing the service, including a reasonable return on capital. Hence, SingPost's request was rejected.

Notes to Editor:

1 SingPost is a monopoly in the provision of domestic and international letter and postcard services within, from and to Singapore, until 2007. Any rate revisions for such services need to be subject to IDA's prior assessment and approval, to ensure that the proposed prices, terms and conditions are just, reasonable and non-discriminatory.
