Fifteen companies were presented the National Infocomm Awards (NIA), the highest accolade for infocomm innovation in Singapore, for making their mark in infocomm development and innovative adoption of infocomm technology. The companies received their awards from RADM (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State for Education, and Information, Communications and the Arts, at the NIA gala dinner this evening.
Jointly organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF), this biennial event provides a platform for recognising innovative products and services from infocomm companies. It also gives recognition to private and public sector organisations which have harnessed infocomm technology to enhance their business.
This year, a new sub-category was created to recognise the efforts of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in using infocomm innovatively to achieve business gains and economic competitiveness. The response to this new sub-category was laudable and nominations came from different sectors, ranging from real estate to even Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Nominations from the public sector demonstrated that the Government continues to innovatively use infocomm technology to push the envelope in the delivery of public services to citizens. This will further enhance Singapore’s position as a leader in e-Government.
In the infocomm product/service category, the nominations showed infocomm companies using a variety of technologies, from social networking and digital media to knowledge management and infocomm security. A new group of young and promising entrepreneurs with a global outlook has also emerged. Many of them submitted products and services that are ready to go-to-market worldwide.
RADM(NS) Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer of IDA and Co-chair of NIA 2008 said, “The spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship can clearly be seen in the many good quality nominations received this year. This bodes well for the Singapore infocomm industry indeed, and we are confident that the winners of NIA 2008 are able to compete effectively in the global marketplace.”
Sharing the sentiments was Mr Pek Yew Chai, Immediate Past Chairman of SiTF and Co-chair of NIA 2008. “The companies displayed high-level of commitment and passion for their products and solutions. We hope the winners will continue to produce ideas that are truly Singaporean innovations with global impact.”

Nominations were evaluated by two evaluation committees and a panel of judges made up of representatives from the infocomm industry. The nominations were evaluated based on the criteria of innovativeness, ease of use, technology used, scale of implementation, market presence and business impact.
This is the fourth time the NIA is being held. Besides recognising leaders in innovation technology and celebrating the spirit of innovation in the infocomm industry, NIA has helped past winners break into overseas market and establish themselves as innovative, capable and credible infocomm companies.
