Singapore, 18 June 2009 | For Immediate Release

The soon-to-be developed online virtual world platform – "Virtual World for Education and Youth Engagement", will help to promote friendship and connect youths from the 205 National Olympic Committees ahead of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Through this 3-dimensional virtual world, youths around the world will be able to learn more about sport, culture and the Olympic values.  Youth athletes coming for the Games will also be able to find out more about Singapore and Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.  They can interact with one another through the games and interactive sports activities found in the virtual world.

Mr Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee said, "We are excited to bring Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games to an international audience through the virtual world.  People from around the world, especially youth, can know more about the Games, cross physical boundaries, form virtual communities and interact with one another anytime and anywhere." The virtual world will go live early next year.

A national initiative by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the application of the virtual world can be extended to education, entertainment and e-Government after the Games. The virtual world is a key IDA initiative to establish Singapore's leadership in embracing advanced digital media technology, as it gains popularity and pervasiveness among consumers and enterprises.

RADM(NS) Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer of IDA added, "The virtual world will demonstrate how infocomm technology can be harnessed for education and engagement of youths, including those from different countries. The youths of today spend a fair amount of time online and are very infocomm-savvy.  A virtual world would certainly be an appropriate platform to engage them."

The "Virtual World for Education and Youth Engagement" project was awarded to ST Electronics (Training & Simulation Systems) Pte Ltd.  An open tender exercise was conducted from March to June 2009 to select the proposal that will best meet project requirements.
