Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, launched the Singapore 2010 Odyssey (www.singapore2010.sg/o) today at the Singapore 2010 Odyssey Roadshow. This is the first three-dimensional virtual world developed based on an Olympic event.

A joint initiative by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC), the Singapore 2010 Odyssey leverages on Singapore’s world class infocomm technology (ICT) infrastructure and innovative use of ICT to present an immersive virtual experience of the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

The Singapore 2010 Odyssey will feature the competition venues and the Youth Olympic Village for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games in a futuristic world set in 3010. Users will be able to create their own avatars, compete in games and learn more about the Olympic Games.

"The Singapore 2010 Odyssey is a unique virtual world platform offering many possibilities for learning, social networking and entertainment, as it reaches out to the youths from all over the world in a fun and interactive way. The development of the 3D virtual world is testimony to Singapore's infocomm capabilities in innovatively harnessing digital media technologies to support major events like the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games," said RADM(NS) Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer of IDA.

Through online games, multimedia content and social activities, local and international youths will learn about the Olympic values and the 26 Summer Youth Olympic sports, participate in in-world Culture and Education Programme (CEP) activities and interact with youths from around the world.

The virtual world also allows students participating in the Friends@YOG NOC-schools twinning programme to create original content specific to their twinned schools. Athletes, officials and visitors attending the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will also get a sneak preview of the Games venues ahead of the actual sports meet in August.

"Singapore 2010 Odyssey, a 3D virtual world is another Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games digital media initiative. SYOGOC is leveraging on digital media to encourage people around the world - especially the youth - to connect to the inaugural YOG and the Olympic Movement. With the Singapore 2010 Odyssey, people from around the world can interact with one another regardless of physical boundaries and experience Singapore 2010 virtually before and during the Games," said Mr Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer of SYOGOC.

Other on-going digital media initiatives for Singapore 2010 include the Million Deeds Challenge virtual torch relay, Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010 and the WhyOhGee microsite.

The Singapore 2010 Odyssey is accessible through registration at www.singapore2010.sg/o. Users will have to download a client application for desktop and laptop personal computers.
