IDA Survey Shows 4G Service Coverage Available at Most Outdoor Areas

Nationwide outdoor street level coverage achieved 18 months ahead of the June 2016 timeline

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has begun surveying the mobile network operators’ (MNOs) 4G network performance, with the aim of promoting greater awareness and transparency to consumers. IDA started conducting the surveys from Q4 2014 to measure the 4G service coverage around Singapore.

The survey results showed that the MNOs have generally achieved significant nationwide street level 4G service coverage for their respective networks, approximately 18 months ahead of the 30 June 2016 timeline. M1 and SingTel Mobile attained more than 99 per cent coverage, and StarHub Mobile achieved 98.95 per cent coverage.

IDA’s survey also showed that the rollout for 4G service coverage in underground road/train tunnels can be improved: StarHub Mobile rolled out its network to provide coverage for most of the road and train tunnels, while M1 and SingTel Mobile have provided coverage for two and four road/train tunnels respectively.

Mr Leong Keng Thai, IDA’s Deputy Chief Executive and Director-General (Telecoms & Post), noted the progress of the 4G implementation in underground tunnels. He said, “Singapore has a high mobile penetration rate, and the 4G subscription rates are increasing every month. Consumers enjoy these higher speed connections, and expect these services to be widely and readily available throughout the country. These published results will help consumers make informed choices as they sign up or renew their mobile service plans.”

The MNOs are required to provide nationwide coverage by 30 June 2016, and by 30 June 2018 for road and train tunnels, following the issuance of the spectrum rights for the 1800 MHz and 2.5 GHz in June 2013. IDA is also studying the standards that may be set for the 4G Quality of Service Standard framework for compliance purpose.
