Outstanding Computing Teachers Awards Presented at Infocomm Media Youth Festival

Promising sight as many youths show interest in infocomm media

SINGAPORE, 12 November 2016: Three teachers – Madam Azlina Binte Muslimin from Boon Lay Secondary School, Mr Gi Soong Chee from Dunman High School and Ms Chew Shuhui Phylliscia from NUS High School - were awarded the Outstanding Computing Teachers award for excellence in Computing Education by Minister of State for Communications and Information Chee Hong Tat, at the Infocomm Media (ICM) Youth Festival 2016. The award recipients used innovative methods to teach their students about computing, and inspired their colleagues to do the same. As part of their awards, they will be sponsored for an overseas Computer Science or Computing conference to aid their professional development. This is the second time the award is presented.

Organized by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the ICM Youth Festival aims to engage Singaporeans, especially our youth, on the exciting opportunities in the infocomm media sector. The Festival featured exhibitions, career talks, workshops and social events on tech and media. It provided visitors with immersive and realistic experiences in areas including augmented and virtual reality, 360◦ video production, life-size 3D paintings, drone-flying and radio DJ and television news presenting.  The festival was held over two days on 11 and 12 November at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Various competitions were held at the festival. The National Infocomm Competition (NIC) is the largest network of ICT competitions in Singapore, recognising talents in various ICT domains. The Ace of Coders competition under the NIC, was one of the highlights. Using an e-sports format, with live on-stage competitions and game hosts, participants wrote Artificial Intelligence (AI) codes to control their troops to defeat their opponents in a fantasy gaming environment.

Another highlight was the NIC Face-Off | App Development Competition. This competition brought six winning teams from three major NIC Competitions, namely Splash Award, [i.code] and National Software Competition, together for a final showdown. The winning team will represent Singapore in the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards –  to be held in Taipei in December this year.

In line with increasing convergence between infocomm and media, the existing Learning Roadmap for primary and secondary school Infocomm Club members, will be broadened to include media-specific domains and will also be made available to students in media related Clubs. IMDA will continue enhancing the learning roadmap to better instill the necessary skills like story-telling and computational thinking in our youth.
