E-Payment Learning Journey Encourages Seniors to Take the First Step in Transacting Digitally

Over 100 corporate, youth and grassroot volunteers come together to guide over 300 seniors in Teck Ghee Constituency to learn how to use e-payments

SINGAPORE – 30 May 2018: More seniors can now benefit from hands-on learning of technology for their daily lives. The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) kicked off the first e-Payment Learning Journey, in collaboration with Teck Ghee Active Ageing Committee (AAC), to empower seniors to use technology securely and confidently. Led by IMDA in partnership with DBS, Land Transport Authority, NETS, OCBC Bank, TransitLink and UOB, the e-Payment Learning Journeys were developed under the Silver Infocomm Initiative1 that forms part of the broader Digital Readiness efforts to help citizens participate in the Digital Economy. This is in support of our Smart Nation efforts to ensure that no one is left behind as we push ahead with digital transformation. Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, who is also the Grassroots Adviser and MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC joined the seniors in the first Learning Journey held at The Grassroots Club today.

2. The e-Payment Learning Journey is designed as an experiential tour for seniors aged 50 yrs and above to learn how to transact digitally using their mobile phone. Seniors will be guided by volunteers to download relevant mobile apps and learn how to log in to their e-Payment accounts. They will learn about staying safe online and pick up useful cyber security tips. They will also learn and experience first-hand different e-payment modes, such as transferring money through mobile apps, paying for F&B items by scanning QR codes and topping up their travel cards using their ATM cards.

3. Volunteers from Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Inc. and Youth Corps Singapore will assist and accompany the seniors throughout the learning journey, exemplifying the whole-of-community approach for digital readiness.

Mdm Noelene De Foe, BBM (L), Organising Chairperson and Chairperson of Teck Ghee AAC shares, "Many seniors have shared with us their concerns and worries on the Smart Nation push. Everything is going digital now including paying for food using smartphone. The Teck Ghee Wellness Programme provides a platform by bringing partners together to help our seniors overcome their fear and make use of the technology to enhance their quality of lives. This is part of the Teck Ghee Wellness Programme to empower seniors to stay active and connected in the community."

"IMDA is continually refining our Silver Infocomm Initiative to better equip seniors for the digital economy and society, and this e-Payment learning journey for seniors is our latest addition. Using technology appropriately allows seniors to connect with their family members, access e-services, and enjoy the convenience of e-transactions and e-Payments. At the same time, we are encouraged by contributions of the many partners who are working with us to prepare seniors for the digital future," Ms. Koh Li-Na, Senior Director, Digital Readiness Cluster at IMDA.

As the Government moves forward with its Smart Nation efforts, it is important that all segments of the population are equipped with the necessary digital skills. IMDA will organise about 50 sessions throughout the year at different locations, in collaboration with various community groups to reach out to about 2,000 seniors.
