MediaWorks fined for breach of programme code

Dated: 22 November 2003

The Media Development Authority (MDA) has fined SPH MediaWorks Ltd for an episode of the programme OK No Problem! that promoted and justified illegal gambling. The programme was broadcast on Channel U on 28 July 2003 at 7.00pm.

In the episode in question, a character extolled the services of illegal bookies. A "specialist" who claimed to be an expert in predicting winning lottery numbers also provided viewers with gambling tips and numbers to bet on.

The MDA received feedback from concerned members of the public. The Authority reviewed the programme and found that it contravened the guidelines in the Free-To-Air TV Programme Code that prohibits the promotion of gambling.

The broadcast of programmes on the commission of crime and the promotion of gambling is considered a major breach of the Code. Having considered MediaWorks' explanation on the matter, and taking into account the severity of the breach, the MDA decided to fine MediaWorks $10,000.
