The Media Development Authority (MDA) has issued a satellite broadcasting uplinking licence to MGM Networks Asia Pte Ltd (MGM). The licence will enable MGM to transmit one encrypted Digital TV Channel from Singapore, beaming feature length films from their film library of about 4,000 titles to viewers in Asia. The MDA welcomes MGM's move to uplink from Singapore, in yet another step in the country's journey to becoming a global media city.

Mr Lim Hock Chuan, the Chief Executive of the MDA, said MGM's decision to transmit their broadcast service from Singapore is a boost to Singapore's position as a regional broadcasting and media hub. "Singapore has the necessary infrastructure, expertise and resources to service international media companies, and we are glad to offer these to MGM. Their presence in Singapore will add to the vibrancy of the local media industry."

There are currently 15 licensed satellite broadcasters based in Singapore.
