Applicants with original short film dieas can now apply for grants of up to s$40,000
The Singapore Film Society (“SFS”) and the Media Development Authority of Singapore (“MDA”) today announced the launch of a new Animated Short Film Initiative (“ASFI”) to encourage more locally produced animated short films.
Designed to give independent animation industry a boost, the initiative encourages local animators to create short films of high quality that can be showcased in festivals and markets around the world. Animation companies and independent animators are invited to submit their proposals for short film ideas in the following categories:
1. Category A: with runtime of 3-15 minutes (eligible for up to S$15,000 funding per project)
2. Category B: with runtime of 16-30 minutes (eligible for up to S$40,000 funding per project)
Open to individuals and companies, proposals submitted will be judged based on originality of concept, quality of story and designs, the applicants’ track record and their ability and commitment to manage and deliver the project. There is no preference for animation style, whether 2D, 3D, Flash or claymation. Criteria for both categories vary and successful applicants will be expected to complete their projects within a year of receiving funding.
Mr Kenneth Tan, Chairman of SFS, said: "Animation is a high strategic priority for SFS and for Singapore as a whole. The opportunities that the field of animation provides - creatively, technologically, and economically - are crucial for a young film production industry like ours. We are excited about the prospects of this Animated Short Film Initiative and believe it will seed and catalyse both production and consumption activity levels."
Mr Seto Lok Yin, Assistant Chief Executive Officer (Industry), MDA added: “MDA is pleased to partner and support the Singapore Film Society in this industry-driven initiative. We hope to see more people take the plunge into the creative industry and create an active and vibrant animation scene here. This initiative provides a good platform for local talents to jumpstart their career and it will benefit the animation industry as a whole as more of our talents get a chance to hone their skills. We are hopeful that ASFI will lay the foundation for creative talents to emerge and become future captains of the animation industry.”
Mr David Kwok, Chairman of the Singapore Animators Connection welcomes this initiative: “Short films are crucial for a young and growing animation industry. North America and Europe have strong funding for this format of animation. Many successful artists and studios around the world have benefited from such support. This new initiative will give Singapore animators strong exposure internationally.”
