BACKGR​​OUND​​

  • ​​The Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) is hosting the Asia Television Forum 2011 (ATF), one of Asia’s leading content markets. Held in Singapo​re, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 7 –9 December 2011, the event is expected to attract 3,500 participants from over 50 countries.

  • Singapore is represented by a delegation of 55 companies at the Singapore Pavilion, D02, where a Singapore Music Showcase, will be on display for the first time. This year marks the largest ever Singapore contingent;in fact, five times more than the previous year, showcasing the best of Singapore’s offerings in television, film and music production, animation, distribution and media services.  

  • Singapore is presenting 75 Singapore programme titles, or more than 430 hours of factual, drama and animation content, for sale and distribution at ATF 2011

Asian Content Busin​ess Summit (ACBS)

  • MDA will be co-organising the 3rd edition of the Asian Content Business Summit (ACBS) from 8 to 9 December 2011, alongside ATF, together with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan (METI) at the Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore. This year’s theme is Building a distribution network for the Asian Content Industry.

  • ACBS is attended by key government and private sector players in the content industry in Asia. Its mandate is to create an understanding of the Asian media industry for information exchange and collaboration.

  • This year’s attendees come from:

  • Japan: Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Digital Content Association of Japan (DCAJ)

  • ​Korea: Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)

  • China: State wwwistration of Radio, Film &Television (SARFT)

  • Malaysia: National Film Development Corporation (FINAS), Multimedia Development Corporation

  • Thailand: Ministry of Culture (MOC)

The outline of ACBS 2011 is as follows:

  • Plenary sessions - Country/region report on the media sector

  • Company Presentations - Building a distribution network of Asian audiovisual content in and out of Asia;Development, monetisation and distribution of 360 content

  • Business matching session

    The first edition of ACBS was held in Japan in 2009; followed by another session co-hosted by METI and Ministry of Culture in Pattaya, Thailand in 2011.

​​1.​​ MediaCorp’s 8 International travels to Australia

  • National broadcaster MediaCorp recently announced "8-International" or 8i, an aggregated channel featuring the best of its Channel 8 programming targeted at PayTV operators.​
  • Glocal Media Networks, a leading industry player in digital technology delivery system based in the United States, provides the technical platform for FetchTV to broadcast 8i in Australia.
  • FetchTV is an Australian subscription TV operator, offering TV video on demand, and interactive applications, with backing from one of Malaysia’s Astro All Asia Networks.
  • 8i is part of the Singapore-Taiwan package offered by FetchTV
  • 8i was previously launched on Indonesia's Indo Vision, a satellite PayTV operator, in November 2011.

​​​2. ​​​​​Singapore chosen as headquarters for Asia’s first-ever multinational peer-driven music Academy

  • Headquartered in Singapore, the Asia Academy of Music Arts & Sciences is Asia's first-ever peer-driven Academy established to honour and award excellence in the arts and sciences of music, and to foster collaboration between all sectors of the music industry across Asia and the world.
  • Music legend Quincy Jones has been named chairman of AAMAS board of governors.
  • Jones will work together with Asian and international music professionals, including Li Si Song and Jeremy Monteiro from Singapore, Peter Casey (Australia), Senn V. Moses (Co-Founder of AAMAS), Edmund Ooi Boon Hock (Co-Founder of AAMAS), Kolleen Park (South Korea), Bernie Cahill (United States), Sunil Kumar (Malaysia), Indra Lesmana (Indonesia) and Maew Chirasak Panphum (Thailand).

​3. Interactive SG and Channel NewsAsia collaborate on Angel’s Gate, a Content 360 TV programme on entrepreneurship
  • Angel’s Gate is a business and entrepreneurial 360 TV programme that engages audiences on TV, mobile and the Internet.
  • Premiering in February 2012, Angel’s Gate is jointly commissioned and co-produced by Interactive SG and Channel NewsAsia, with support from MDA
  • With targeted viewership on Channel NewsAsia as well as online with content distribution partner YouTube, season 1 of Angel’s Gate is already currently in the post-production phase and will feature 24 business ideas in diverse industries, ranging from biotechnology to travel.

​​​4. Infinite Studios’ soundstage facility ​​kickstarts operations on Batam​ with HBO Asia’s first original film co-production feature Dead Mine
  • Production has commenced on action-horror picture Dead Mine.
  • The partnership between Infinite Studios with the support of the MDA and HBO Asia is a strategic move that kickstarts Infinite Studios' plans to produce international film and TV content in Asia for the global market using its soundstage facilities at Mediapolis@one-north in Singapore, due for completion by Oct 2012, and on Batam Island.

​5. Mr Moon merchandise launches in Singapore

  • Mr Moon, produced by Sparky Animation, with Skaramoosh (UK) and Title Entertainment (Canada), was sold to over 10 territories worldwide, including Disney UK.
  • This December, Mr Moon merchandise, including toys, bags and clothing, will be making its debut at leading retailers all over Singapore, including Action City, Kiddy Palace, Takashimaya and Popular Bookstores.
  • Frasers Centrepoint Malls and Sparky are also jointly holding a series of Mr Moon events at all the Frasers Centrepoint Malls all over Singapore from 18 November to 25 December 2011.​

​6. Off The Fence ventures beyond distribution to content acquisition as part of its new regional strategy

  • China's Universal Full Band Media has acquired two 3D titles from OTF as part of its new 3D channel offering.
  • Off The Fence has recently distributed 1300 hours to two Chinese new media channels - DDDream Management Consulting and JY Entertainment
  • ​OTF has also struck a 300 hour PayTV deal with Korea's Nine Planners

7. Touch Music Publishing expands catalogue in production music for TV and film productions
  • Touch Music Publishing is an independent music publisher in Asia. wwwistrating over half a millions songs from all over the world, Touch has more than 100 exclusive songwriters who have written many hits in the last two decades.
  • Touch has formed partnerships with various international companies including Apollo Music from Denmark, AUX Publishing from Sweden, and Mediatracks from the UK for production music.

​8. Haunted Changi sold to Seminal Films, LLC, for distribution in the USA and Canada
  • “Haunted Changi” is about a group of local filmmakers who explored the famously haunted Old Changi Hospital in Singapore with terrifying and tragic results.
  • Seminal Films, LLC is a film company specializing in independent film acquisition and production based in USA. Seminal Films is a division of the Da Silva Group, a well-established media group with radio interests in Canada as well as music and film labels.

9. Lawrence & Priscilla’s World of Magic television special will be telecast in Mandarin for the first time to a worldwide Mandarin speaking audience through Xinya Azio channel
  • A father-daughter celebrity magic phenomenon from Singapore, Lawrence and Priscilla has toured the world with their unique illusion show. This one hour special was filmed in Hollywood before a live audience in HD.
