SINGAPORE, 06 OCTOBER 2022 — Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) will, for the first time, partner the Association of Independent Producers (AIPRO) to co-lead a delegation of 17 Singapore media companies to MIPCOM 2022. Singapore companies at the market will present over 460 hours of compelling stories from Singapore and Asia across more than 60 titles, from innovative animated series and heartwarming food-themed shows to documentaries that dig a little deeper and dramas that enthrall. They showcase uniquely Asian perspectives to a global audience, made possible through global investment opportunities and regional collaborations.
Here are some highlights of our made-with-Singapore content showcased at MIPCOM 2022:
Animation: the are of making stories come alive
Expect plenty of fun, innovative and heartwarming animated content for audiences both young and old, filled with endearing characters and Singaporean quirks. Scrawl Animation Pte Ltd’s “Alex Player” is an exciting animated action-adventure tween series starring Alex, a brilliant 12-year-old video gamer who has to toggle between life in school and trying to win the national e-sports interschool championship.
heart”, an underwater fantasy about Dewi, an introverted six-year-old girl who falls into the ocean with a powerful magical amulet. Can she save the world and return to her family or be transformed forever into a sea creature? Be prepared for a splashing good time and the universal themes of love, friendship and sacrifice.
From Blu Mushroom Pte Ltd comes “OceanAugust Media’s “Sherlock Sam”, based on a popular Singaporean children’s novel series, sees Sam and his motley crew of friends solve problems through teamwork. The fresh, cross-cultural twist on classic Sherlock Holmes-inspired stories and mix of comedy and mystery will delight the little ones.
Back for season 3, “Downstairs” is an adult animated series by Robot Playground Media, and follows a cast of wacky and colourful coffeeshop stalls owners as they embark on crazy adventures through their little neighborhood.
Dramas full of thrills and spills
Who doesn’t love a little horror? “Losmen Melati” from Infinite Studios is about an old Dutch colonial plantation-turned-guest house, where the lost, wondering and tired gather. In the losmen’s dark rooms, the guests’ worst fears manifest, and unfortunately, there’s no checking out.
Mocha Chai Laboratories Pte Ltd’s “Venus on Mars” is a romantic comedy about an undergraduate who is accidentally transported to a parallel universe called “M-Earth”, where only men live. As she struggles to find her way back to earth, she navigates issues regarding gender equality, feminism, relationships with friends and family, and falling in love.
Adding to the strong dramatic offerings is “Jonesy”, which features a high-functioning Gen-Zer, a talking monkey, motion-sensing spectral haze monsters, and seeing through the apocalypse with a pop-culture filter. This action-comedy series from Monochromatic Pictures is about gathering the strength to step out into a brave new world and finding yourself.
Food in Asia: a captivating culture
Through food, we express love and longing, culture and traditions. The culinary landscape in Asia is incredibly diverse, and the stories built around about food are as delicious as they are scintillating. From Beach House Pictures comes “Order Up!”, which follows Fresh Off the Boat star Hudson Yang on an epic chef apprenticeship journey across America and Singapore, where he chases his dreams of becoming a chef. Will he discover the secrets of Asian cooking and get in touch with his eastern heritage in sunny Singapore? We’ll find out.
Mediacorp doles out nostalgia, childhood memories and celebrity life stories with “Dishing with Chris Lee”, an infotainment series that sees the popular Singapore actor preparing meals for his famous guests in his cosy kampong kitchen. There’s also “Zero Waste Kitchen”, an homage to the ongoing Zero Waste Movement where amateurs compete in a zero-waste cook-off, using ingredients that are often thrown away.
Asian perspectives on global affairs
Beach House Pictures’ “Silk Road From Above” takes viewers on an epic and majestic ride spanning continents, uncovering the stories of ancient travellers on the famous trade route. Rich cultural stories abound, as modern characters parallel the paths and endeavours of their ancestors.
Digging deep into Asia’s social and environmental issues, The Moving Visuals Co. has produced the documentaries “We Don’t Play Dolly”, which explores how India's blind women fight to find a place in the male-dominated world of cricket; and “The Ugly Side of Beauty”, an investigative piece that explores the conflict and controversy behind the beauty industry and the struggle of miners in India who risk it all to search for mica, the mineral that gives make-up its shine.
Mediacorp comes in strong with the second season of “When Titans Clash”, a report on how the ongoing war in Ukraine has left two superpowers in the world divided, and the impact of worsening US-China relations on Asia. In “Climate for Change” Season 2, watch how individuals and enterprises are bringing cleaner energy to new frontiers and pioneering projects; while “Keeping The Music Alive (In Defiance of the Taliban)” Season 2 follows Afghanistan’s first and only all-female orchestra in a race for survival after the Taliban seizes control.
