Challenge

The theme of code::XtremeApps:: 2017 Open Category is My Smart City: Connecting Our Senses.

The set of challenges for the Open Category will be released on 2 June, 6 weeks before the start of the code::XtremeApps:: 2017 Open Category hackathon on Friday to Saturday, 14 - 15 July.

Participating teams will have 24 hours to complete a project that responds to at least one of the given challenge statements.

Rules and Regulations

This category is open to anyone - students from the Universities, Polytechnics & ITE, working professionals and programming enthusiasts of all ages. Participants under the age of 18 (based on the date of birth at the time of entering the hackathon) are required to obtain parental consent.

Each team must have one to three participants. Team members need not be from the same school, education institution or organisation.

Judging Criteria

Judging will be based on the submitted team entries at the end of the Hackathon. Each entry will be judged on its own merit regardless of the number of contestants in the team.

Schedule

Hackathon will be held on Friday, 14 July 2017 and Saturday, 15 July 2017.

Judging will be based on the submitted team entries at the end of the Hackathon. Each entry will be judged on its own merit regardless of the number of contestants in the team.

There will be 2 rounds of judging for the Open Category Hackathon.

The first round of judging will take place immediately after the 24-hour hackathon on 15 July and each team is required to do a short presentation on their submission.
Each team will be judged by a panel of judges and the aim is to shortlist a few teams for the final round judging.

The shortlisted teams will go through a second round of judging on 18 July 2017 where teams have to present and demonstrate their solutions, to determine the winners.



Workshop

While attendance in the Workshops is not compulsory, they are great learning opportunities. We encourage you to take advantage of them and be ready to take on the challenge.

Challenge Statements Briefing and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) SensorThings API Training. 

During the Challenge Statements briefing, participants would get to hear and clarify any questions about the challenge statements contributed by the industry and government agencies for the hackathon.

The training workshop will provide an introduction to the OGC SensorThings API (STA) to enable the participants to quickly start using it and to explore it further by themselves for the competition.

The participants will learn the key aspects of STA through a use case (e.g. a weather station), with hands-on practices on the use of dashboards and tools, coding, code walkthrough, and other developer resources available on the Internet.

Pre-requisites for workshop
- Basic programming skills in JavaScript and HTML
- Basic knowledge of HTTP
- Participants to bring their own laptop and charger

Sharing on Personal Data Protection

The purpose of this briefing session is to share with the hackathon participants the requirements of the “Personal Data Protection by Design Prize”, including what considerations under Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) participants can incorporate in their solutions during the Hackathon. There will also be a Q&A after the briefing for participants to seek clarification from the presenters.
