SINGAPORE – 1 August, 2019: 81 recipients of the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s (“IMDA”) inaugural Singapore Digital (SG:D) Scholarship1 today received their awards at the SG:D Scholarship Award Ceremony, graced by Minister for Communications and Information, Mr S Iswaran.

Of the 81 recipients awarded, 24 will be studying in a Polytechnic, 28 will be pursuing undergraduate studies in schools such as Imperial College London, and 29 will be taking up specialist postgraduate studies in areas such as Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence and Filmmaking. Scholarship recipients pursuing undergraduate studies in Cybersecurity are jointly awarded by IMDA and Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), while recipients pursuing postgraduate studies in Cybersecurity are jointly awarded by IMDA and the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF).

Mr Tan Kiat How, Chief Executive of IMDA, said, “We received a bumper crop of more than 1,000 applications2  for the SG:D Scholarship. The vibrant infocomm and media sector is growing from strength to strength, and continues to attract bright and passionate talent to this industry. I congratulate our 2019 batch of SG:D scholars and look forward to their contributions as the next generation industry leaders in Singapore’s digital economy.”

Based on IMDA’s annual infocomm media manpower survey, the total number of infocomm media professionals employed was 210,000 in 2017, and demand is expected to grow by another 35,800 from 2018 to 2020.

In 2018, IMDA announced enhancements to the Scholarship and its tertiary programmes. Recognising that the convergence of infocomm and media will bring on new opportunities for innovation, IMDA extended the SG:D Scholarship (Polytechnic) to students beyond ICT courses, to include those pursuing studies in Arts, Design and Media. IMDA’s Industry Preparation for Pre-graduate (iPREP) programme has similarly been extended to tertiary students in Arts, Design and Media courses. The SG:D Scholarship (Postgraduate) was also expanded to support Postgraduate studies in deep tech areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Cybersecurity and Immersive media. In addition, the SG:D Scholarship will support scholars’ professional development beyond their studies, through curated development programmes and global exposure opportunities.

This year, to enhance the community and network between new and existing scholars, IMDA has launched a Singapore Digital Scholarship alumni LinkedIn group for them to connect for advice, mentorship and sharing of experiences.
