With the objective to promote responsible use of data and support businesses’ data-driven innovation while building consumer trust, IMDA works closely with industry and support them through policy prototyping and data regulatory sandbox. One of such industry efforts is Facebook Accelerator Singapore.
In Oct 2018, IMDA collaborated with Facebook to kickoff the Facebook Startup Station Singapore. Now known as Facebook Accelerator Singapore, the Accelerator supports regional start-ups that have a focus on innovative use of data. This is Facebook's second data innovation startup program globally, after France, and the first in Asia. The programme (6-month duration for each season) has since supported 24 startups through 2 seasons within the region. Startups in the programme would be exposed to concepts such as notice, dynamic consent and AI explainability as well as policy prototyping. More details of the programme can be found here.
Alongside the Accelerator programme, IMDA and Facebook also supported the startups with industry participation through Design Jams (facilitated by TTC Labs) to identify new ways of building consumer trust in data, and to work with UI/UX experts to improve the interface and experience to address the start-ups’ data protection concerns. Through the real-life experimentation, Facebook’s TTC Labs and IMDA co-developed a guide to present the key learnings and examples of Notice, Consent and Disclosure in digital product design.
