Standards and Classification

​​​​Over the years, the media environment has undergone major changes, driven largely by the forces of technology, media convergence and globalisation.

Similarly, IMDA's approach towards content regulation has also evolved from censorship to media classification and the promotion of media literacy. Through the formulation of guidelines for the various media, the public can now access a wide range of content. At the same time, guidelines help ensure that the young are safeguarded from content unsuitable for them.

The ambit of IMDA’s content standards and classification work in the area of Arts Entertainment includes plays, musicals and dance performances, art exhibitions, variety shows and pop/rock concerts. Read more
Over 13,000 films and videos are submitted to the BFC for classification every year. With only three ratings when the classification system was first introduced in 1991, it has since expanded to six in 2011, with consumer advisories where necessary, to encompass various genres and cater to children and adults alike. Video games have evolved in sophistication from being merely games for children to games for adults with mature themes. In light of this, IMDA (then MDA) introduced the Video Games Classification system in 2008 to provide more choices for adults, and protect the young from games that are unsuitable for them. Read more

Publications and audio materials are largely industry co-regulated. To encourage a vibrant publishing sector, IMDA has introduced initiatives such as the Registered Importers Scheme (RIS) and exemption for certain publication categories. Read more
