As an industry regulator, IMDA seeks to promote and preserve the competitiveness of the infocomm and media sectors in Singapore. By enforcing regulatory requirements imposed on companies operating in the industry, it prevents unfair business practices that reduce competition for consumers.

In Singapore, IMDA ensures that licensees comply with the relevant Codes of Practice, such as the Telecom Competition Code and the Media Market (Conduct) Code. They both enable and maintain fair and effective competition, ensuring a comprehensive range of choices for the consumer in the sectors.

Besides Codes of Practice, IMDA also issues guidelines, minimum Quality of Service standards, and reviews mergers and acquisitions involving licensees. They serve the similar purpose of encouraging market competition and enhancing consumer choice.
