Starting today till 25 September 1998, the National Computer Board (NCB) will showcase the latest electronic commerce and Singapore ONE applications at its booth at COMDEX/ASIA at Singapore Informatics '98 held at the Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Themed "Intelligent Island: Connected City", the NCB Pavilion will highlight Singapore's development as the Global IT Hub of Asia and comprises three main showcases:

  • An Electronic Commerce Showcase
  • A Government Showcase
  • An IT Research & Development Showcase

In addition, there will be a Year 2000 Showcase to promote the awareness of the Millennium Bug issue.

Electronic Commerce Showcase

The E-Commerce Showcase will highlight Singapore's progress in creating an advanced electronic commerce environment. Exhibits include the latest electronic commerce applications by the industry, such as Internet-banking, business-to-business solutions, and electronic shopping. These applications feature the use of electronic identification and various payment systems, such as the Netrust digital certification and payment systems like CashCard and secure credit card payment solutions.

Also on show is the National Chinese Internet Programme (NCIP). Visitors will be able to get hands-on experiencewith the Chinese Webtop or Hua Zong Wang. This is a one-stop, easy, convenient, and fun gateway to a rich collection of Chinese Internet resources as well as interactive online communities that cater to a wide variety of interests.

The Virtual Communities Programme will also be highlighted. Managed by the Online Technologies Consortium (OTC) hosted by the NCB, the programme is an initiative to help groom the local online industry to quickly become global players in the emerging borderless virtual community marketplace. The aim is to help service providers band together to gain market presence and to attract users through interactive and personalised services. Members of the OTC will showcase various virtual communities for students, investors, book lovers and others, including the newly launched business virtual community BusinessOne by the National Library Board.

Government Showcase 

The Government Showcase will highlight the government's electronic Public Services initiatives to bring government services closer and more conveniently to the public. The exhibits include some 10 online and e-commerce enabled government applications, including:-

  • CPF Online Services, by the Central Provident Fund Board
  • eGazette, by the Government Gazette
  • Mindef Internet Procurement System (MIPS), by the Ministry of Defence
  • Government Internet Tendering Information System (GITIS), by the Ministry of Finance (Budget Division)
  • Integrated Land Information Service (INLIS), by the Ministry of Law
  • Electronic Government Services Directory (E-GSD), by the National Computer Board
  • The Singapore Government Shopfront, by the National Computer Board
  • Electronic Transmission of Returns (ETR), by the Singapore Department of Statistics
  • Immigration Automated Clearance System, by the Singapore Immigration and Registration, Ministry of Home Affairs 
  • Online Booking of Basic Driving Theory Test, by the Singapore Police Force 
  • iBOOK, a sports facilities reservation system by the Singapore Sports Council

IT Research & Development Showcase

This showcase highlights projects from the Kent Ridge Digital Labs, Information Communication Institute of Singapore, and GINTIC Institute of Manufacturing Technology. These include:

  • PC 261 Video Conferencing Software, Webwatch, and NetEffect, by the Kent Ridge Digital Labs. 
  • ATM-based Remote Monitoring and Security System (ARMS), by the Information Communication Institute of  Singapore 
  • Internet-enabled Diagnostic & Maintenance System, and Product Data Exchange Service, by the GINTIC Institute of Manufacturing Technology
