Singapore plays host to the world's largest conference and exhibition on Tamil Internet, Tamil Internet 2000 (TI2000), being held at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 22-24. The event is organised by the Tamil Internet Steering Committee (TISC), an organisation formed under the auspices of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) to promote the development and use of Tamil Internet in Singapore and the region.

The three-day event, carrying the theme 'Directions to the Digital World', is expected to attract more than 20,000 visitors from all walks of life. Singapore President S.R. Nathan and the First Lady will grace the Gala Dinner on July 22.

TISC chairman and Chief Advisor for TI2000, Mr. R Ravindran, said: "We are proud to bring an event as outstanding as TI2000 to this region. TI2000 is the focal point for IT professionals and global businessmen keen on reaching the 65-million strong Tamil diaspora through the Internet. More importantly, TI2000 is a mainstream international conference focussed on the globalisation of the Internet through increased usage of popular Asian languages, including Tamil."

Mr Ravindran, who is also Singapore Member of Parliament for Bukit Timah GRC, added that the event is designed to heighten awareness of opportunities available in the Internet Economy to the Tamil community in the Asia region - especially in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Dr. Kaizad Heerjee, Assistant Chief Executive, Online Development, IDA, said, "We are extremely pleased and delighted to be hosting the largest conference and exhibition on Tamil Internet in Singapore. As Singapore emerges to be a key player in the new economy, one of our key thrusts is to ensure that every citizen is net-savvy and enjoys the benefits of an e-lifestyle. This event will therefore not just position Singapore as a key Tamil Internet Hub, but will also go a long way in forging closer ties and strategic alliances with the Tamil community and industry world-wide, for the development of multilingual content and the adoption of e-commerce."

TI2000 is divided into three distinct activities - the conference, the e-business and the community hubs. These hubs are designed to reach out to specific groups of visitors, each offering a unique value proposition.

The conference hub, with more than 50 academic and technical papers, will focus on issues surrounding standards in Tamil Internet and Tamil Computing.

The e-business and community hubs will spice up the event with a host of attractive activities including an Internet Trade Fair, an e-Business Job Fair, meetings between business leaders and special Internet programmes for both senior citizens and children. Computers to 15 needy families will also be distributed as part of IDA's PC-Reuse Scheme. The computers were donated by MasterCard International and will be bundled with basic computer training for the recipients. A high-level panel, comprising speakers from Oracle Corp., Pentafour Software, and Sangamam.net, will also discuss the evolution of Asian Netpreneurs.

Dignitaries in attendance at the event include Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry BG George Yeo (opening e-Business & Internet Community Fair on Saturday, July 22 morning); Singapore Minister of State for Communication and IT Mr Lim Swee Say (opening Tamil Internet Conference on Sunday, July 23 morning); Malaysian Works Minister Mr S. Samy Vellu; Tamil Nadu Minister For Tamil Language & Culture Mr Tamizh Kudi Magan; Vice Chairman of the Tamil Nadu IT Task Force Professor M. Anandakrishnan; and Tamil Virtual University champion Professor V.C. Kulandaiswamy.
