A twelve-member committee has been established to look into the deployment of cable standards over the Singapore Cable Vision's (SCV) cable infrastructure and to monitor and identify world cable technologies for use in Singapore.
Spearheaded by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the National Cable Standards Committee (NCSC) is made up of experts from the industry and institutes of higher learning (IHLs). The committee, chaired by Dr Brian Chen, Chief Technology Officer of IDA, held their first meeting last Friday. The committee will meet on a quarterly basis to discuss issues related to cable standards and technologies in Singapore. (See Annex A attached below for list of the NCSC's members).
According to Dr Brian Chen, "There was great participation and enthusiasm among the committee members during the first NCSC meeting. We are going to further expand the membership to make the committee truly industry-driven with IDA just being the facilitator."
The NCSC's key thrusts are to discover emerging technical solutions for the deployment of new cable services, to promote the growth of the cable industry and to explore ways to increase data over cable in the business and residential sectors. (See Annex B attached below for the NCSC's Terms of Reference).
Added Dr Chen, "In addition to closely tracking cable industry developments world-wide, this committee will organise seminars to create greater awareness on the potential of cable technology among the IHLs and industry players."
"SCV is pleased with IDA's initiative to form the National Cable Standards Committee. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with key members of the industry through this committee together with IDA, as we review the options for the delivery of future voice, video and data services via our broadband cable network," said Mr Thomas Ee, Vice President of SCV's Broadband Engineering Services and member of NCSC.
Added Mr Ee, "SCV will certainly welcome the views from all parties as they will contribute towards greater operational expediency and efficiency, economical sensibility and more importantly, help to serve the common good of all."
"We applaud the IDA's effort to catalyse the development of broadband in Singapore with the formation of the cable standards committee," said Mr Steve Young, Vice President of Redback Network's Asia Pacific Operations and member of the NCSC.
