SGNIC Announces Implementation of Registry-Registrar System

With effect from 1 January 2003, the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) will implement a Registry-Registrar (SgR2R) System to allow multiple registrars accredited by SGNIC to register com/org/net/edu/per.sg domain names with SGNIC.

Singapore, 30 October 2002 | For Immediate Release

With effect from 1 January 2003, the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) will implement a Registry-Registrar (SgR2R) System to allow multiple registrars accredited by SGNIC to register com/org/net/edu/per.sg domain names with SGNIC.

Under this new system, SGNIC will continue to carry out its registry function in terms of maintaining the country's overall .sg database and setting related domain name registration policies. However, to ease the transition into the SgR2R System of 1 January 2003, SGNIC will begin to relinquish its registrar function progressively from 1 November 2002, in favour of accredited registrars, such as ISPs and web-hosting companies. Accredited registrars can then provide a host of services to users ranging from Internet connection, web-hosting to domain name registration as well. With competition in domain name services, users can benefit from the one-stop and innovative value-added services provided by those accredited registrars.

To promote competition, SGNIC will not limit the number of accredited registrars but for a start, SGNIC is pleased to accredit the following five registrars to provide registration service. Meanwhile, registrants whose domain names are due for renewal on or after 1 January 2003 should arrange for their domain names to be transferred to these accredited registrars. SGNIC will be sending out letters advising registrants on the transfer details over the next seven days. If they do not receive the letters by the third week of November, they can email SGNIC for assistance at : dnq@nic.net.sg or Tel : (65) 6774-0479.
