Four-year Infocomm Manpower Development Roadmap to Inculcate Deeper Infocomm Skills Amongst Students and Provide More Opportunities for Building and Deepening the Capabilities of Infocomm Professionals

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) announced the new Infocomm Manpower Development Roadmap v2.0 ("MDEV 2.0") today. MDEV 2.0 seeks to ensure that Singapore's infocomm manpower continues to remain competitive with the developments in the industry globally and within Singapore.

Singapore is a leading infocomm hub in Asia, with infocomm multi-national companies, non-infocomm MNCs and international start-ups setting up IT functions here. Skills in emerging technologies such as cloud computing, business analytics, Web 2.0 and mobile application are increasingly sought by businesses. According to the latest Annual Survey of Infocomm Manpower 2010, demand for infocomm manpower in Singapore, which includes those employed and job vacancies, has grown by almost 10 percent in 2010, reaching 157,400 from 143,500 in 2009.

MDEV 2.0 was announced by Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Mr Lui Tuck Yew, at the Singapore Computer Society Gala Dinner and IT Leader Awards ceremony 2011, where individuals were honoured for their achievements and contribution to the IT profession and development of IT in Singapore. A joint effort between the government and industry, MDEV 2.0 aims to develop the local infocomm workforce to take on high-end, high value-added jobs with good pay potential.

Mr Lui said, "The four-year roadmap will be focused on developing high-end infocomm experts and leaders. It aims to achieve three outcomes. First, to develop talent with deep infocomm skills, and for these talent to have the ability and agility to exploit infocomm to enable industry shifts; second, a greater share of infocomm talent; and third, to ensure that Singapore's manpower profile is more closely aligned to Singapore's role as a global hub."

Through its initiatives and programmes, MDEV 2.0 will benefit more than 18,000 infocomm professionals, as well as school students in Singapore. (For details, please refer to Annex A (336.84KB)).

MDEV 2.0 builds on the achievements and momentum of the first Infocomm Manpower Development Roadmap which had been successful in achieving its desired outcomes of attracting good students to study infocomm and increasing the employability of infocomm graduates and infocomm professionals by providing them with industry-relevant skills. The first roadmap was launched in 2005 (For details, please refer to Annex B (42.27KB)).

IDA, with its partners, will be further investing about $30 million in these infocomm manpower development programmes over the next two years.
