1. Good morning and welcome to E-Business Connections 2004. Together with RosettaNet Singapore and XMLOne, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore is proud to present two exciting conferences under one banner.
Catalysing Adoption of XML and RosettaNet
2. Singapore was an early adopter of EDI to promote B2B activities through computer networks. As the Internet became more commonly used to conduct business transactions, new opportunities for e-commerce integration were created.
3. Apart from having the underlying technology (XML) for businesses to send messages to one another, there was a need to create common B2B processes. RosettaNet, an industry-driven initiative, was created in the US to provide an XML-based B2B standard that would help connect businesses, thus reducing costs and improving efficiency.
4. Singapore was among the earlier RosettaNet enthusiasts in Asia. In September 2000, we facilitated the set-up of the RosettaNet office in Singapore to help local manufacturers use the new global e-business process standards. To encourage more companies to adopt RosettaNet, Singapore developed the first-of-its-kind RosettaNet eLearning Centre in August 2001 to impart knowledge on implementing the standards.
5. To create an environment conducive to the adoption of XML, IDA undertook joint initiatives with partners like the XMLONE User Group, Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation, Java Smart Services Lab and Web Services Innovation Zone. With the rise of Web Services as an integration technology, in May last year, IDA launched WEAVE, a S$40m programme to support Web Services initiatives in Singapore.
6. So, while the RosettaNet Global Partner Conference and the XMLAsia Conference have each developed well, it is timely to bring them together, so as to better address common challenges and issues pertinent to the e-business community. Our hope is to harness developments in Infocomm technologies and business processes intelligently for the benefit of the high-tech industries in Singapore.
