Opening Remarks By Ms Wu Choy Peng, Deputy Chief Executive (Industry) & Government Chief Information Officer, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore At the eHome Showcase Launch & Partners' Gathering on 4 April 2006, HDB HUB.

Good afternoon,
Industry partners,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. Thank you for taking time off this afternoon to attend this gathering. I understand that many of you here today are partners in our Connected Homes programme, and have contributed much of your industry knowledge over the past few years.

Results and Outcomes

2. In recognising benefits of a connected lifestyle and the tremendous business opportunities for the industry, the programme sets out to provide a test bed environment for the industry players to develop, pilot and deploy innovative and integrated end-to-end solutions for the homes.

3. I am glad to note that we have some successes. Through the two Call-for-Collaborations (CFCs) under the Connected Homes Programme, 48 companies have collaborated in eight trial projects. Together, they have developed a total of 63 integrated end-to-end solutions to connect the homes and communities. This has exceeded our original target of 50 such solutions.

4. These initiatives addressed the lack of integrated end-to-end solutions. They also helped the industry players to develop their capabilities and technological know-how, and to gain valuable insights on consumer needs and market potential from participation of over 4,000 trial users, which demonstrated Singapore as a viable test-bed for innovative solutions for homes and communities.

5. We are pleased to highlight the other positive spin off from the Connected Homes effort, which is in the recognition received from international players such as Philips, the consumer electronics giant. Philips benefited from participating in IDA's initiative, and subsequently proceeded to launch its own global initiative called Connected Planet. This has led to an investment of S$150million over the next five years to support development in this area with Philips Singapore being recognised as the first global test bed under the Connected Planet.

6. More importantly, I believe that our partners have found value from participating in this programme, be it in developing their capabilities and technological know-how, gaining of valuable insights on consumers' needs and market potential, or understanding the viable business models for commercial rollouts.

Moving Forward

7. For the next phase of the programme, we will be aligning the Connected Homes efforts under IDA's 10-year infocomm masterplan, iN2015, specifically under the Digital Media and Entertainment cluster.

8. We will be working towards accelerating the development and pilot of innovative digital media and entertainment applications in the home environment through the exploitation of enabling infocomm technologies. We hope to empower the consumer communities through Infocomm by delivering innovative and personalised experience to the consumers. More of these initiatives will be announced in the coming months.

9. We are pleased to inform you that IDA, in collaboration with Singapore Exhibition Services and Parks Associates, will be hosting the first Digital Homes Conference during the CommunicAsia week this coming June. We invite you to attend this exciting conference and hear from leading players on the trends in digital homes.

10. We eventually aim to position Singapore as a reference deployment site for Digital Homes products and services through active collaborations with key digital media and entertainment players, as well as consumer electronics companies. Hence we look forward to having all of you coming on board and will continue to work with us in this area of Digital Home for a digital lifestyle.

11. Before I end off, we would like to thank LeGrand for kindly providing this afternoon's refreshments.

12. Thank you.
