Seminar On Music Use for TV, Film & Digital Media

Know your rights, understand the rules of the game and avoid making sour notes when you're working with music for films and TV.

That is the objective of the seminar aims to help local professionals in the creative media industry here. Organised by the Media Development Authority (MDA) and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), "Legally Sound" aims to boost professional standards and enhance the knowledge of industry practitioners who are working with music for film, TV as well as digital productions.

To be held on 23 March, the seminar will feature speakers from different fields of expertise, including rights management agencies like the Composers &Authors Society of Singapore Ltd (COMPASS) and Music Publishers (S) Ltd (MPS). More than 350 participants from the media industry are expected to attend the event.

The topics to be addressed include music rights clearance in Singapore and international practices in the use of music in various types of productions, said the MDA's industry development director, Mr Seto Lok Yin.

"Today, some industry players may lack the necessary knowledge of the different types of rights involved in the use of music in TV and film production. They may not be familiar with the clearances required when using existing music, and how to go about obtaining the necessary legal clearances. This seminar will help to address these issues. It will also provide an opportunity to clarify any misconception of how music is employed, and help media practitioners and professionals pick up essential business management skills in protecting, managing and exploiting media assets."

Added IPOS' assistant director-general for infrastructure development, Mr Wong Sheng Kwai, "We're pleased to partner the MDA and extend our educational efforts to cater specifically to the needs of the media practitioners. More than 350 participants are expected at the seminar, which is the second in a series of media IP activities held this year. The first event was the inaugural Media IP Clinic held on 28 February organised also with IPOS and supported by the Asian Patent Attorneys Association. That clinic focused on IPR issues in film and television production. Some of the key issues addressed were the protection of TV format rights and non-payment for services rendred in a production.

The MDA and IPOS intend to collaborate on more seminars/workshops, which will continue to focus on issues relating to film and television production and also cover digital media and publishing.
